John H. Greer is my ggg-grandfather. He was born October 31, 1822 in Westmoreland Co., PA. He married first Martha J. Cunningham on October 4, 1846 in PA and died September 7, 1894 in Mercer Co., PA. John and Martha had Robert E., Williamson J., Robert E. (different son, the first son died as a young child), Winfield Scott (AKA Walter), Mary E., Josiah, and Charles Paul Greer. I have tons of information on John H. Greer and his family. I would love to share with any family members no matter how distantly we are related. John H. Greer is the brother of Josiah Greer and Isabella Greer Michael.
John H. Greer enlisted as a Private July 15, 1861 and was mustered out June 11, 1864 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA. He fought at 2nd Bull Run, VA; Fredericksburg, VA; Gaines Mills, VA; Mechanicsville, VA; South Mountain, MD; Gettysburg, PA; Bristoe Station, VA; Catlett's Station, VA; Manassas, VA; Wilderness, VA; Spotsylvania Court House, VA; North Anna River, VA; Bethesda Church, VA and several more battles. I am very proud to be his granddaughter and have joined the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War through him.

Alexander M. Gilkey joined for duty on 20 June 1861 at Camp Wilkins, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, signing in for three years service. He was mustered in 21 July 1861. He was promoted from 1st Corporal to 2nd Lieutenant 1 August 1862. He fought in the battle of Fredericksburg but went missing after the battle, having been taken prisoner and sent to Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia. However, he was paroled and then promoted to Captain 16 May 1863. He was breveted to Major for 'gallant conduct at the battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia,' 13 March 1865.
