I'm seeking unpublished letters, diaries, and photographs of members of the 29th Pennsylvania Infantry ('Jackson Infantry') who participated in the Battle of Gettysburg. Thank-you very much for your reply.

My Great Great Great Uncle Benjamin F. Sandy served in Company A of the 29th Pennsylvania Infantry. Born in 1837 in Philadelphia PA. Enlisted 6/16/1861 in Philadelphia. Discharged July 16, 1864 Expiration of Service. US National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers 1866-1938.

Enlisted May 14 1861 Honorably Discharged July 16 1864 Taken prisoner at Winchester abt 22 May 1862, sent to Belle Isle, Richmond VA, Paroled at Aikens Landing VA Sep 13, 1862 and returned to his regiment.

William Boon, of Philadelphia, born 1841, joined the 29th Pa. Infantry in the summer of 1861. Wounded at Culp's Hill, Gettysburg, his leg was later amputated though he served until the war's end. He lived in Darby, Delaware County, Pa., and died in 1914. He was the brother-in-law of Sgt. Thomas Boyd Beebe.

Enlisted in Co C, PA 29th Infantry Regiment on 1 July 1861. Mustered out on 16 Jul 1864.

William Henry Miles, 6'0', hazel eyes; occupation: miller; born 26 Apr 1841 Clifton Mills Farm, PA; christened Presbyterian Chester Co ENLISTED: Harrisburg, PA 16 Jun 1863, Company 'E' 29th Reg DISCHARGED: 3 Jul 1863 as Corporal reason due to 'expiration of Term of service', age 22

Col. William Rickards Jr., of Philadelphia, was a jeweler by trade when the war started. He was mustered into service in July 1861 as captain of Company I. Captured by Confederate forces in May 1862, he was exchanged in August and promoted to lieutenant colonel in October 1862. In May 1863 he assumed command of the 29th as colonel. He led the regiment in the defense of Culp's Hill at Gettysburg, at the night battle in Wauhatchie, Tenn., and in the attack at Lookout Mountain, Tenn. His troops were the first to reach the top of the mountain in the Battle Above the Clouds, planting the 'Stars and Stripes' on the mountain's summit. While leading his troops in an assault on a Confederate defensive position in a skirmish at Pine Knob near Kennesaw Mountain, Ga., on June 15, 1864, he was severely wounded with a gunshot to the chest. While recovering, he was promoted to brevet brigadier general and honorably discharged in November 1864. After the war, he moved to Franklin, Pa., where he worked as manager of an oil drilling business and later became a dentist. He died at the age of 75 on May 25, 1900, in Franklin, Pa.

For anyone interested, I have letters written on Union Stationary from John Applegate who was killed on July 3, 1863 in the Battle of Gettesburg, on Culps Hill

Sgt. Thomas Boyd Beebe, born 1839, was mustered into the 29th in summer 1861. He was given a medical discharge in November 1862. He died in 1890.

William D. Rickards was a cousin of the 29th''s commander, Col. William Rickards Jr. He joined the 29th as a lieutenant in July 1861, serving in Company E and later in Company K. He fulfilled his three-year enlistment and was discharged as a captain in July 1864.

Not sure of the company. Hard to read Captain was William H Faites. I have the discharge notice dated 7/17/1865 near Alexandrea
