This was my great-great-great-great grandfather. He served in the 62nd P.V., Company A. He mustered in on Jan 7, 1862 at the age of 18 and was transferred to the 155th P.V., Company F, on July 3, 1864 (when the 62nd had finished its 3 years of service and the original members mustered out). He was then transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps in Sept. 1864.

This is 1st tour of duty, 2nd enlistment with 104th Pa Vol Inf.

John Long was my husband''s great, great uncle. He died on the Wheatfield at Gettysburg on July 2nd, 1863. The family has 4 letters from him that talk about Lincoln coming for a visit, the battle at Fredericksbur, serving as steward at the Frederick City I Hotel Hospital (In MD) and other things. He was a school teacher from Armstrong County PA before mustering in on July 4th 1861.

Christian Zeitler emigrated from Baden to the U.S. in the early to middle 1850s. The family settled in Baltimore. The summer of 1861 found him in Western Pennsylvania for reasons unknown. In July he enlisted in Allegheny City, now the north side of Pittsburgh, with the 62nd PA volunteers. The 62nd, originally designated the 33rd Regiment but later renumbered by the federal government, was one of the earliest 3 year regiments. Christian served till he was wounded at Bethesda Church in Virginia, the far end of the line at Cold Harbor. He lost the use of his left arm as a result. After recovering he for a time rejoined his family in Baltimore, but soon returned to Allegheny. There he married Maggie Sellman; had 8 or 9 children, only 4 of whom lived to adulthood; belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic and the Union Veterans Legion; worked at various jobs with some difficulty due to his wounds; and died on Decmember 30, 1903. He is buried with his comrades in the GAR section of Uniondale Cemetery in northern Pittsburgh.

My g-grandfathers first name may be listed as Carr or Carl and also was transfered to the 155 reg. just days before he died in the Military Hospital (Judiciary Square), in Washington City, Josiah Carr Truxall died July 13, 1864, an was buried in Arlington National Cemetery - Site 5891. He left a widow, Mary and three children.

George was critically wounded at the Wheatfields of Gettysburg July 2, 1863. He spent months hospitalized recovering from wounds to both feet, one of which was amputated. Dr. Jones the field doctor wanted to take George's other foot when it was later learned it was infected, but George said he would not submit to another amputation.
