76th Pennsylvania Infantry

Relation: Great Uncle. The 76th Pa., or Keystone Zouaves, participated in the initial attacks on Fort Wagner [followed later by the 54th Mass. of the movie ''Glory'' fame]. His birth name was James Montague but he used the alias John Moore during the war.

John Shook is my great great uncle. He joined the army October 1, 1861 as a Private, reinlisted February 1, 1864 in Hilton Head, SC, was promoted to full Sergeant and was wounded and died during the battle of Fort Fisher, North Carolina on January 15, 1865. He was 18 years old when he enlisted. He was 5'7' tall with blue eyes and light hair. He was born and raised in New Castle, Lawrence County, PA and was the son of Jacob Shook and Mollie Brown (Jacobs first wife. His second wife was Sarah Sophia Carter.) He was never married and didn't have any children.

Private Levi Dasher, Co. C, 76th Penna. Vols., died April 16, 1863 of chronic diarrhea as reported in the newspaper The New South, Port Royal, South Carolina, Vol. 1, No. 33, Saturday, April 18th, 1863. GR

My ancestor was among the first men killed in the unsuccessful attempt to seize Battery Wagner. I know virtually nothing about him other than he was approximately 20 or 21 years of age at the time of his death.

Cpl Henry A. (Harry) Miller enlisted in Co F, 76th PVI (Keystone Zouaves) at age 13 as a musician. He had the distinction of serving with his father, Sgt William Miller, during the campaigns of the 76th until he was wounded at Fort Wagner. He recuperated in Philadelphia, while his father and the 76th were at Bermuda Hundred, Drury's Bluff and Cold Harbour. Cpl Miller sent many letters home to his mother of which I have only the newspaper reprints. The letters give much insight into life in a Civil War Camp. Cpl Miller survived his wound and the war, married twice and had one child to his second wife, who was my grandfather.

Sgt William Miller served with Co F, 76th PVI (Keystone Zouaves)and was the oldest fellow in the Company at 58 in 1864. He survived the war and returned to Blair County, PA. He was married at the time and had four children, The oldest son, Henry A. (Harry) Miller served with him in the 76th. A daughter and two sons remained at home on the farm. I am his great-great grandson.
