140th Pennsylvania Infantry

'Jack' Purman was carried off the wheatfield by Lt. Thomas Park(s) Oliver of the 24th Georgia Infantry. Lt. Oliver carried Purman on his back while crawling through the wheatfield on all fours. Lt. Purman became a physician and very close friend of Lt. Oliver after the war. Purman met and married his nurse, Mary Witherow, daughter of Samuel Witherow of Gettysburg. He and Lt. (later Capt.) James Milton Pipes of the 140th Pennsylvania attempted to save Pvt. John Buckley of the 140th and in doing so both were seriously wounded in the wheatfield. Both Purman and Pipes were awarded the Medal of Honor by the U.S. Congress.

Levi Taylor was my great great grandfather. He and his brother Abner W. Taylor were both part of the 140th Infantry Co. A from Sept 4 1862 until the spring of 1865. Levi was awarded an 8 dollar per month pension for a gun shot wound to his left elbow.

Wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, PA on July 2, 1863. Shot in the left shoulder. Discharged on May 31, 1865 with the rest of his company.

William Turner was 14 or 15 years old when he signed up to fight in the Civil War (1861 - 1865). When he signed up he was placed in Company E of the 140th REGIMENT INFANTRY. The 140th Infantry was organized at Pittsburg and Harrisburg and mustered in September 8, 1862. His next stop was to Parktown, Md., September 9, and duty guarding Northern Central Railroad till December 1862.

Enlisted February 27, 1864. Wounded at Petersburg, VA June 17, 1864 with loss of leg. Discharged on surgeon's certificate March 16, 1865.

He was wounded at the battle of Gettysburg, receiving three gunshot wounds, one slight and two serious. Sent to a Philadelphia Hospital for about eight months assigned to the 3rd Veteran Reserve Corp. of which he was an officer before again fit for duty,. In the spring of 1864 he returned to his unit remaining until discharged at Augusta, Maine, in September, 1865

Pvt. James C. Lyle enrolled at Cross Creek, PA 21 August 1862 and was mustered in 4 September 1862 in Pittsburgh, PA. He was mustered out on 31 May 1865. During his time in the army, he saw action at the Battle of Gettysburg. Source: National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C.
