3rd Battalion, South Carolina Light Artillery (Palmetto Battalion)

He served in Co K 14th Regiment from 27 Mar 1862 through 19 Jul 1862. He enlisted in the 3rd Palmetto Light Artillery from 25 Apr 1862 until discharged for disability on 28 Jul 1862. He was buried in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Saluda, SC.

John Drura Askins enlisted in the Confederate Army 1 April 1862 along with two of his brothers: William P. and Robert Evander. He served as a private in Company E of the Third (Palmetto) Battalion of South Carolina Light Artillery under Lt Colonel E.B. White. The unit was assigned to Battery Wagner on Morris Island off the Charleston harbor, and remained on that island until it was evacuated in 1864, during which John D. Askins was wounded slightly in the head. [The bombardment of Morris Island by the Union Army was, up to that time, the heaviest in history. For 58 days, fewer than 1,000 Confederates held off more than 11,000 Union troops and artillery, and the Union fleet.] His unit moved to Aresenal Hill in Columbia, South Carolina where he was reported present in December 1864. James was 39 years old when he enlisted at Darlington, Darlington District SC on 1 Feb 1863.Enlisted for the war by Capt J D Johnson. This unit was also known as Capt White's Battn; Light Artillery. He is given a 60 day medical furlough on 30 June 1864. his unit fought mainly in the Charleston SC area but was sent north when Charleston fell to the invaders. He is related to me by marriage.

Manley was born 15 Jan 1833 in Tans Bay, Darlington County, SC. The 1860 census finds him at age 27 at Mars Bluff, Marion County, SC., He has 6 items in his archival file. He was enlisted by Col. Edward B White 20 Mar 1862 at Marion, Marion Co. SC. He was discharged 7 Dec 1862. No supporting paperwork states why. He died 18 Dec 1917 in Lake City, Florence Co. SC and is buried at the Elim Baptist Church Cem in that county. We are related by a distant marriage.

James was born 6 Dec 1842 in Effingham Twp, Darlington Co. SC. He enlisted 30 April 1862 at Darlington by J.D. Johnson for the war. Assigned to Kemper's Artillery Battalion, Hood's Division, Longstreet's Corps. Took the fight to the invaders first at Rappahannock Station, 2nd Manassas and on to Appomattox. Died 7 May 1921 at Florence, South Carolina and buried in the Byrd Cem. in Timmonsville, SC. He has 18 items in his CSA archival file. He was the father-in-law of my 3rd cousin 3 x removed.

Charles was 32 years old when he enlisted 14 April 1862 at Darlington, Darlington District, SC. Enlisted by Capt Johnson for the war. Other than being sick twice, he was present at all the battles his unit fought in. He survived the invasion and died in 1908. We are related by distant marriage.

Vincent was born 12 Nov 1822 in Morven, Anson Co., NC just north of the South Carolina state line. He has 22 cards in his archival file. He enlists at about age 40 at Camp Simon's SC in Co E 3rd [Palmetto] Battalion SC Light Artillery for the war also known as Col. White's Battalion. Mustered at Camp Yeadon on Wappo Creek SC. 1 May 1862 he is transferred to Ferrier's Co D in same unit. 12 Nov 1862 he is detailed as Wagon Master for the Battalion. In July 1864 on James Island SC he is detailed as Forage Clerk for the Battalion per order of General Taliaferro. He is finally assigned to the Quarter Master Dept. He survived the invasion and died 6 Dec 1888 and is buried at Shiloh UMC at Cairo, Anson Co NC. He is the father in law of my 3rd cousin 4x removed.

David was 18 years old and the son in law of James Redden Gee. He enlisted10 months after James on Dec 1863. He joined his unit as it was departing Charleston after it fell to the invaders. He saw action in the waning months of the war in the Carolina Campaign. He survived the war and applied for a CSA pension 23 April 1919. He died in Lamar, Darlington Co SC in 1932. We are related by marriage.

Samuel was born in Stokes Bridge, Darlington Co SC 11 June 1828 and died 1 Apr 1912 in Lydia, Darlington Co SC. He was about 34 years old when he enlisted at Darlington on 1 Mar 1863. Co E Palmetto Light Artillery 3rd Battalion aka [White's] Enlisted by Capt J. D. Johnson for the war. After the fall of Charleston the various companies were scattered with some serving in the Army of Tennessee. We are related by a distant marriage re: my 4th cousin 3x removed. He is buried in Wesley Chapel, Lamar, Darlington Co. SC.
