5th South Carolina Infantry

He was a mulatto negro who fought with the Confederacy.

Enlisted May 30,1864. Killed in action September 30, 1864. Research indicates he was probably killed at Ft. Harrison during the Richmond Campaign.

Mustered in 13 April 1861. Died around Centreville, VA, 17 Feb 1862. Cause unknown. Son of Zibeon Cantrell and Francis Davis. Left a widow (Margaret Davis) and five children. My 2nd cousin 4x removed.

William Craig was with the 5th Batalion of State Troops, Senior Reserves...Chesterfield District.

Mortaly wounded at Battle of Gaine's mill, June, 1862. He died in his 19th year and is buried in the Henderson Family Cemetery in Newberry County, South Carolina.

Faires enlisted in York County, SC in April 1861. He was wounded in the hand and hip in the Battle of Seven Pines, VA, May 31, 1862. He received a slight head wound in the Battle of the Wilderness, May 5, 1862. Faires surrendered and was paroled at Appomattox Courthouse April 9, 1865.

John Lewis Devlin, a son of Colonel James J. and Margaret [Wardlaw] Devlin, was born in the bounds of Cedar Springs in Abbeville County, South Carolina. His father was a veteran of the War of 1812 and his paternal grandfather, James Devlin fought with Col. Wm Moultrie's Regiment and witness Sergeant Jasper raising the flag over the fort after the Battle of Sullivan's Island in Charleston Harbor in 1776. Following in their footsteps, at the age of 45, John Lewis Devlin enlisted in Company I, South Carolina 5th Infantry Regiment; serving throughout the war. Married with eight children, John died in 1875 and is buried the the churchyard cemetery at Cedar Springs A.R.P. near his father & grandfather.

Originally enlisted in the Holcombe Legion as hospital steward. Reenlisted in 5th SC in spring 1863 during ANV reorganization. Captured at Battle of Wauhatchie 10/28/1863 Died at Fort Delaware prison 1864 My great-great-great-grandfather on mother's side. Left widow and possibly 5 children. From Spartanburg, SC area.

Enlisted 13 April 1861 in York, SC by Capt. Seabrook. Sent to hospital 15 Feb 1863. Died in Gaston Co., NC 22 May 1863. Brother of my Great Grandfather John James Strain.

Joined in the original organization of the 5th in 1861 (enlistments were for one year). Fought at 1st Manassas. He was one of the few members that did not stay in Co K when it became Co K of the Pametto Sharp Shooters, he went into Co H.

R.J.F. Wall originally enlisted in the 13th South Carolina Infantry Regiment, Co F, Apr 1861 but was discharged due to Typhoid Fever in July 1861. Went home to Spartanburg, SC until Mar 1863 when he reenlisted with the 5th Regiment, Co K (2nd). Served until the end of the war April 1865.

Hiram was the brother of my gr gr grandfather. Hiram and four brothers belonged to the Spartan Rifles from Spartanburg, SC. If I have my info right, in 1862 when most of the company went into the Palmetto Sharpshooters (his four brothers did), Hiram stayed in the 5th SC. Relatives have it that he was in. One source says he stayed in the 5th S.C. when Jenkins formed the Palmetto SharpShooters. Killed in 1862, Battle of 'Antietum' (Sharpsburg), Md. Another source says he was captured in the defense of Columbia, S.C. in 1865 and died from exposure. This info came from Ed Trammel, whose wife’s sister married Wm. Joseph White, descended from Rufus Belton White. Hiram White is buried in Elmwood Cemetary, Columbia, S.C..

Joined unit at original organization in 1861 (one year enlistment) and fought at 1st Manassas. When the 5th broke up in 1862 Co K joined the Palmetto Sharp Shooters and continued to fight.
