JAMES H SHIPLEY Rank: Sergt Age: 28 Enlisted: Sept. 25, 1863. Mustered: Nov. 14 1863. Remarks: Privt from enrollment to Apr 1 64: Corp to June 1 65: then appd Serg. Father of William L. Shipley, who married my gr aunt, Elizabeth Land ( Lizzie.) Probably began the war as a Rebel ' conscript in the 60th Tenn. Inf. Probably went over to the Yankees after returning to East Tennessee from Vicksburg.

Battle of Cassville. Battle of Kenesaw Man, Decauter, GA. Battle of Utoy Creek, GA. Battle of Nashville and Franklin. In Sizemore Scouts. Received Pension Oct 1887.

Born in Sullivan County,Tn,abt 1831.5'8' fair complexion hair & eyes black.Enrolled 9-25-63 Knoxville,Tn.Captured 10-19-1963 Zollicoffer,Tn Died 12-7-63 in prison at Danville,Va.& buried there. Maternal grandfather of my paternal grandmother,Annie Blakely Land.Her paternal grandfather,Jackson Blakely was in Co.G of the 8th and was captured the same day,in the same battle,& also died at Danville.

Born Dec 25, 1832, Died Feb 28, 1919. Shot in left knee. Was also in Co. D, Gilliams Brigade, Joined in Rogersville, Tn. Served 1862-1865. Took leave to go home Rogersville, Tn. Made neighbor return stolen cow by gun point.

Enlisted in his home County of Sullivan in upper East Tennessee on 9/22/1863 as Union forces pushed North following the fall of Knoxville and scattering disorganized Confederates in upper East Tenn. However the Rebels rallied and in fighting at Zollicoffer,( present-day Bluff City )in Sullivan County, Jackson was captured on 10/19/1863. He reportedly '' broke custody '' on the battlefield but while seperated from his troop was recaptured near his home. He was reportedly '' shot while attempting to escape from a Confererate prison in Virginia, on or abt 4/15/1864.'' This, according to his widow, Mary Whitehorn Blakely in her pension request. Jackson and Mary Blakely were the paternal grandparents of my grandmother, Annie Blakely Land.

Born in Sullivan County, (east) TN. He enlisted there on 10/25/1863. On 11/7/1863 he mustered into 'G' Co. TN 8th Cavalry as an 18-year-old Private. This was six days after his uncle, Andrew Jackson Blakely, a new recruit in the 8th TN Cavalry, was captured by the Rebels in a skirmish at Zollicoffer, TN. Conflicting reports say James died of wounds in Knoxville either December 1863 or January 1864. Wounds possibly received during the siege of Knoxville.

He was married to Sarah Hashbarger.( niece of my maternal gr gr grandfather John Harvey Cox ) ) After being discharged as ' under age ' from the Rebels he joined the Yankees in the fall of 1863. Applied for a Federal Pension May 5,1876. Died at Jonesboro,Tenn June 17,1913. Is pictured on page 100 of ' Tennessee's Union Cavalrymen '

Another brother, Reuben served in the Union 37th Ky mtd Inf. Brother Robert C. was a Confederate in Co. C 60th Tenn mtd inf.

Son of James A.Boyd & Elizabeth Paxton of Sullivan County in East Tennessee. Served with his brother John. Cousin George W Boyd was Confederate.Rank: Corpl Age: 18 Enlisted: Oct. 11,1863. Mustered: Oct 27,1863 Remarks: Private from enrollment to Mar 8,1865.Then promoted to Corporal.
