4th Tennessee Cavalry

Thomas was born 24 Sept 1845 in Bedford County, Tenn. His family history and his CSA gravestone gives his unit at the 21st Tenn. Cav. I have not found his records for that unit but did find him [2 cards] in the 4th Regiment Tenn Cav. He is described as having dark hair, fair complexion, blue eyes and 5 foot 11 inches tall. He is listed as being from Bedford County, Tennessee. His regiment surrendered near Raleigh, NC 1 May 1865, he swallowed the yellow dog on 31May and went home. He is buried beside his wife Sarah Frances Young at Oak Grove Cem. Sequatchie, Marion Co. Tenn. We are related by marriage.

W. H. White, having resigned as 1st Lieut. from the 16th Tennessee Infantry in January of 1865, transferred to McBride''s Company, Starnes''/Mclemore''s 4th Tennessee Cavalry and transferred prisoners to Andersonville until held up at Augusta Ga. by officers gathering convalescents and stragglers. He made it to Greensboro, N.C. to see J. E. Johnston with the flag of truce in hand and left with Gen. Dibrell and many others of the 4th Tennessee to have a hand written parole from Dibrell. He continued home with his comrades, and resided back in Faulkner SPrings, Warren County to be married in 1866.

Andrew was born 10 Jan 1837 in Dunlap, Sequatchie Co. Tenn. He served in the 5th Battalion Cavalry [ McClellon's] and Co H 8th Tenn Cavalry aka 1st Battn: & 4th Battalion Tenn cavalry. [Smith's]. He has 2 cards in his 5th Battalion file & 11 cards in his 4th Tenn. Cavalry file. He enlisted at Chatanooga, Tenn by J.W. Gillespie on 29 Aug 1861. This Battn: was consolidated and became Co H 8th Tenn. Cav. Smith's. He fought in many battles and skirmishes including Fishing Creek aka Mill Springs and known to the enemy as Logan Crossroads. He was captured near his hometown of Dunlop, Sequatchie Co. Tenn on 21 Aug 1863 and sent to Louisville on to Camp Chase, Ohio arriving 1 Sept 1863 and on to Rock Island, Ill. arriving 24 Jan 1864. He died 10 Jan 1911. We are related by marriage.

4 Battalion (Branner's) Tennessee Cavalry became 2nd Tn Cavalry (Ashby's)in May 1862

4th TN Cav (Branner's) was absorbed into the 2nd TN Cav (Ashby's). William J. Heacker enlisted as Private. He was a surgeon and established the field hospital at the Battle of Bean Station, TN

James was born in Warren County, Tenn. 15 Jan 1837. the 1860 census has him in Dist. 4 Sequatchie Co. Tenn. at age 23. He is a Merchant, and the PO is at Dunlap. He enlisted on 28 Aug 1862 at Pikeville, Bledsoe County. Attached to Warton's Brigade and fought at Perryville and Murfreesborough. It was disbanded on 23 Jan 1863 and transferred to the 22nd Battalion Tenn. Infantry. He has 3 cards in this unit. He has 3 cards in his 22nd Infantry archival file. The 22nd fought under Leonidas Polk's Corps, Major General B.F. Cheatham's Division, Marcus J. Wrights Brigade which was comprised of the 8th, 16th, 28th, 28th, 51st and 22 Battalion plus Carne's Battery of Artillery. James was married to Flora Theresa Pankey who was my cousin 3 times removed. He saw action in both the Atlanta and Carolina Campaigns. He died 29 Jan 1910 in Sequatchie Co. Tenn and is buried there in Stone Cemetery.

Woodlief was born 18 Feb 1834 in Bellefonte, Jackson County, Alabama. The 1860 census has him there as 26 years old. He has 3 cards in his archival file. [ remarks on cover CMR: see 4th Russell's Tenn. Cav.] He enlisted 1 Oct 1862 at his home in Bellefonte by Capt. Rice for the war. He was paid $24.40 cents for the use of his horse. Assigned to Wharton's, Biffle's, Dibrell's, & Harrison's Brigades. Battles: Parker's Crossroads, Franklin, Chickamauga, The Atlanta Campaign, The Carolina Campaign & battle at Aikens SC on 11 Feb 1865. During the war he rode primarily with Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest & Gen Wheeler. He died 28 Feb 1902 in Rossville, Walker County, Georgia. He is buried in the Forest Lawn Cem. Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tenn. We are related by a distant marriage.
