Pvt. James L Lance was born in 1849 and died in 1943. He was my Great Grandfather and I was named James after him. Ironically, I was born 100 years after him in 1949. Granpa Jim was a member of the GAR and attended the 75th Reunion of CW Veterans at Gettysburg, PA. He was accompanied by his grandson, Charles O. Lance, my father. My father was later in WWII and the Korean War. My father told my Grandpa Jim was captured by Confederate who were planning on hanging him and others they had captured. Grandpa Jim was tied to a tree with rawhide. During the night it rained and the Grandpa Jim was able to free himself, steal a horse and escape. His companions were not so fortunate. Grandpa Jim's tombstone in the First Baptist Church of Tellico Plains, TN states 'A Soldier of the Union Army'. Grandpa Jim had a fondness for whiskey it is told and it finally killed him at 94 years of age.

James T. Cheek -- Private, 5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry, Company B (Surname also spelled as "Cheeks") Born: 1842, Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois Died: 14 Jan 1899, Morgan County, Tennessee Relatives who served: Francis M. Cheek, brother, 5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Co. F) John W. Cheek, brother, 5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Co. B) Hardy Hughes, father-in-law, 5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Co. E) Thomas J. "T.J." Hughes, brother-in-law, 5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Co. E) Served the Union Army during the latter years of the war (1864-1865) James was later transferred to Co. F, possibly because of the enlistment of his brother Francis. He had previously served with his brother John in Co. B, however, John ultimately deserted. Buried: Fry Cemetery, Morgan County, Tennessee. Does not possess a government-furnished military tombstone, but his marker does detail his service.

John S. Dillard Davis - Military Record of John S. Dillard Later changed last name to Davis, my G G Grandfather from Mineral Bluff,Fannin Co., Georgia. He was conscripted or drafted into the Confederate Army - Co. H, 52nd Reg't Ga Infantry in 1862 and was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He got back to Cleveland, Tennessee after Gen. Grant released him and join the Union Army: Co. B, 5th Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry, Commanded by Captain Thomas Baines - was on guard for 48 hours straight. This unit was organized at Cleveland, Nashville, Calhoun and Chattanooga, Tenn., September 23, 1864. Attached to District of the Etowah, Dept. of the Cumberland, and garrison duty in that District and at Dalton and Marietta, Ga., until July, 1865. Skirmish at McLemore's Cove, Ga., February 1, 1865. Expedition from Dalton to Coosawattie River and Spring Place, Ga., April 1-4. Mustered out July 17, 1865. Rudison H. Land: Born Jul 1844 in North Carolina,Gr,grandson of Thomas Land & Eleanor McClanahan, ( my 6th gr,grandparents ) Son of James Carruth Land. Co.B : Mustered September 23, 1864. Enrolled at Cleveland, Bradley County. Official Records. Dyer's Compendium states the regiment did garrison duty at Dalton and Marietta, Georgia; was engaged in a skirmish at McLemore's Cove, Georgia, February 1, 1865; was on an expedition from Dalton to Coosawattie River and Spring Place, Georgia, April 1-4, 1865; and was mustered out July 17, 1865. Regiment Name 5 Tennessee Mounted Inf. Mustered in at Cleveland, September 23, 1864 through February 1, 1865; mustered out at Nashville, July 17, 1865.

Robert M. Cole enlisted September 15, 1864 at Cleveland, Tennessee, having walked there from Georgia. He was twenty-five years old, born in Buncombe County, N.C., and a farmer. He was recorded as having black eyes, dark hair, and a fair complexion. He was five feet, ten inches tall. He served until he was mustered out July 16, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. During his service he was on detached service from August 5, 1864 to February 28, 1865, with no known explanation of where he served or in what capacity during that time. He was born February 22, 1839 and died April 28, 1924. He was married twice and had a known total of nine children. He lived most of his adult life in very northern Georgia and Polk County, Tennessee, around the copper mines at Ducktown and later farming in McMinn County.

William George Sliger was born in McMinn Co, Tenn. in 1848 and enlisted in Co. D, 5th Tennessee Mounted Inf. late in the war. Received a pension. Later became a Methodist preacher. Married Pheobe Ellen Knox. Has a veteran's stone and is buried at Tranquility Cemetery in McMinn Co.

2nd great grandfather. Originally from Sevier Co., but had moved to McMinn Co. Brother Archibald was in 2nd TN Cav, USA. Became a minister after the war died 10/29/1906 in McMinn Co., and is buried there.

From Choestoe , Georgia. Claimed he was 18 ; but was really 13. He had been involved in union guerilla activity in north Georgia in 1st Ga Infantry, Companies A and B . Just before he joined the guerilla outfit ; his uncle had been hanged by confederate bushwhackers. Probably got toTennessee with papers to search for stolen horses; supplied by a sympathetic county official.

Enlisted Bradley County, Tennessee. My g-grandfather. Lived in Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (presently Oklahoma) after the war as most of his family relatives resided there. Most of the Ward family emigrated to Indian territory in 1834 from Georgia. Intermarried into Cherokee tribe late 1770s. Returned to Tennessee after 1880 and die in Lutts, Wayne County, Tennessee about 1924.

James H. Hammons was my Great Grandfather. I have his discharge paper.

Wesley was born in Meigs County Tenn about 1848 and joined up around his 18th birthday. Moved to Texas before 1898. He is my great grand father, his daughter Mahala married my grand father J M Harris at Bailey TX.

Inscription on tombstone reads: 'Co. K, 5th TN Mounted Infantry.' It does not say which army he might have been in. Sam grew up in Gilmer Co. GA, near Chatanooga TN. Sam is my g-g-granddfather
