59th Tennessee Infantry

My ancestor is James B. Cooke, who was a Colonel in the 59th Tennessee Infantry. He was succeeded by Lieutennat Colonel Eakin. I am just now starting to research J.B. William H Doggett was born in Silvercola, Sullivan County, TN the son of Arthur Jackson Doggett and Elizabeth Jane Droke Doggett and was my Great Uncle. He served in the Tennessee 59th, fought at the Battle of Piedmont June 5, 1864 and was captured then or soon after. He died Sept 2, 1864, a prisoner of war at Camp Morton and is buried nearby at the Confederate Mound at Crown Hill Cemetery Indianapolis, IN.

Enlisted 8 July 1861 by ? Gillaspie at Camp Cummings for a period of twelve months in Company K, 26th Tennessee Infantry (3 East Tennessee Volunteers.) Transferred to Company F, 63rd Tennessee, Fain’s Regiment on 28 May 1862 by order of General E.K. Smith. Transferred to Capt. Giesler’s Co. 59th Tennessee Volunteers in March 1864. Final date of service June 1864,

He was paroled with the surviving members of his regiment at the end of the Battle of Vicksburg.

Enlisted November 23, 1861 at 28 yrs old in McMinn county, Tn for 12 months by JW Gillespie. Captured Vicksburg, Miss July 4, 1863 and paroled July 9, 1863.

Family history noted our John Denton from Monroe Co TN was killed in the battle of Vicksburg. Research shows a John Denton from Co 'A' 59th TN INF as having been captured at Vicksburg May 18, 1863. He is listed as having died at the Jefferson Barracks Military Facility in St. Louis, on Aug 3, 1863 and is buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. I have not been able to find a record of Co 'A' in any regimental history, and would like to know if it was organized at or near Monroe Co.

Would like to find out more details about this regiment. All I have is the gravestone application and gravestone as proof of his service

James Land Son of James Noah Land & Nancy Allison ( Ellison ) of Monroe Co Tn 'On detached service as railroad guard at Bristol Tn ' ( very near our home ) AWOL on roll dated 9/2/1863 Probably caught behind enemy lines with his brother Ellison and never returned to service Served in the 59th with his brother, Tillman. Paroled at Vicksburg July 4, 1863.

59th Tennessee Mtd. Infantry. (Cooke's Regiment. 1 (Eakin's) Batt'n Inf.) Enlisted December 1, 1862 Athens Tenn.

Fought the Vicksburg (MS) Campaign, Champion Hill (MS), captured at the Siege of Vicksburg (MS). Released days later and rejoined his unit. He then fought at the Battle of Piedmont (VA) and recaptured. POW for one year at Camp Morton (Indianapolis, IN).

Served with the 59th Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Cooke's)(Eakin's 1st Battalian), captured at Vicksburg, paroled.

Enlisted as a Private. in Capt. J.P. Brown's Co., at age 22 in Madisonville, Monroe County, Tennessee on December 10, 1861 for 12 months. This later became Co. B, Cook's Regiment, a part of 1st (Eakin's) Battalion, Tennessee (Mounted) Infantry (CSA) in the Civil War. He was present on the Co. Muster Roll in May/June 1862; also for Sept/Oct 1862, but was listed as Absent without Leave Nov. 2 on the Nov/Dec 1862 Co. Muster Roll. He continued to be listed as Absent without leave each 2 months through June 1863. Date and place of death are from the Confederate Widow's Pension. Among my North Carolina Land ancestors/relatives that migrated to East Tennessee. Tillman Land : 59 Tennessee Mtd. Infantry. (Cooke`s Regiment. 1 (Eakin`s) Batt`n Inf.) Organized May, 1862; captured at Vicksburg July, 1863; served in Vaughn`s Brigade in East Tennessee and Western Virginia thereafter. Company B James Pryor Brown (to major), Charles F. Wilson, Co. 'B'. Mustered in at Madisonville, Monroe County, December 12, 1861. Oral family history says Tillman was captured by the Yankees and because of threats made against his family joined the Union Army's 7th Tn. Mtd Inf. late in the war.

This was my great great grandfather. He enlisted in Madisonville (Monroe County) TN 12 Dec 1861. He was 28. Physical description: white, 5'6'' tall, 158 lbs., brown hair, gray eyes, light complexion, tattoo left forearm. He was captured July 4, 1863 at the Battle of Vicksburg.

Capt. Charles Franklin Wilson lived in Monroe County, TN and moved to Kansas in 1877 and settled in Elk County, Kansas, between Moline and Grenola. He is first cousin to Captain John David Wilson of Co. 'E'. Captain Charles Franklin Wilson is buried in Moline Cemetery, Elk County, Kansas.

Thomas was born 14 Dec 1818 in Lincoln Co. Tenn. He enlisted at age 44 as 2nd Corporal 10 Jan 1862 at Knoxville in 1st Eakin's Tenn. Battn: He was promoted to 3rd Lieut and to 2nd Lieut on 22 May 1862. This unit became co D 59th Regiment Mounted Infantry. He was captured at Vicksburg, paroled and rejoined his Regiment. He has 14 cards in his archival file. His cover file provided the correct data and states his data is filed under reference as Mashburn, Thomas. Family sources has his death 5 Oct 1864. I have been unable to confirm. His unit is in action at Burl's Gap and Abingdon, Washington Co. Va. in that time frame serving as dismounted Infantry in Morgan's Division. I suggest that is where he died and is in an unmarked grave at that location. He is the father in law of my 3rd cousin 3 times removed.

Obituary: Captain J. D. Wilson dead. Caption J.(Dot) Wilson passed away last Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arch McSpadden of near Madisonville,Tennessee. He had suffered a gradual decline in health for a number of years which ultimately resulted in the final accute illness that caused his death. Captain Wilson lacked a little over a month of being in his eightieth year. Captain Wilson served with distinction and honor in the cause of the Confederacy in the Civil War. Being captain of a company, it was a fitting sequel to his life that Doctor J.L. Bachman, one who served the same cause, should conduct the funeral rites. Dr. Bachman, in his usual impressive manner, told of the lofty character and ideals and patriotic devotion of the deceased, also of his loyalty and great worth as a citizen and devotion as a husband and father. Internment was in the Chestua Campground Cemetery. A large number attended the funeral and burial services. Captain Wilson was born March 13, 1837. He married Miss Mary Young, a niece of Gen. J. C. Vaughn. To them were born nine children, all living except one that died in infancy. They are Mrs. Arch McSpadden, H. D. Wilson, Athens, TN. , Mrs. H. L. Reynolds, Englewood, George Wilson, Tellico Plains, Mrs. A. G. McDonald, Christianburg, Ed Wilson, Hiram, Montana, Robert Wilson, Butler, Montana, and Miss Mattie Wilson, who lives at home. The passing of Capt. Wilson brings to mind that one by one those who fought in the great conflict between the states are now rapidly answering the last great roll call. Captain Wilson served well both as a soldier and civilian. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the public in their great loss. William Harr was the son of John W and Eleanor Droke Harr. He was a first cousin to Jimmy and William Doggett also of the Tennessee 59th. He received a head wound in battle. He was the last surviving Civil war veteran in Sullivan County, TN passing away Dec 2, 1938 at the age of 96. He was my Granfather's 1st cousin.

Eakins 1st Battalion(on grave marker)

Jacob was son of Conrad and Catherine Wassom Weaver. He was born in 1839 at his parent's home on Weaver Branch Road, Bluff City, TN. Jacob enlisted in CO F, 59th TN MOUNTED INF April 2, 1862. He was enlisted by W L Eakin, Lt. Col. CSA. Jacob served in the Vicksburg Campaign from March 29-July 4,1863, where his unit surrendered July 4, 1863 and he became a prisoner of war. They were paroled July 9, 1863. After the exchange the regiment was assigned to Brig. Gen. Vaughn's Cav. Bde. and mounted, serving in East Tennessee and Western Virginia afterwards. His name appears on an Oath of Allegiance sworn to at Chattanooga, TN June 14, 1865. Jacob died in 1922. Jacob was brother to James (CO E 63rd Regt) and William (CO E 63 Regt).

David Gaston, eldest son of James and Mary 'Polly' [née Sheets] Gaston, was born near Madisonville, Tennessee in Monroe County. At the beginning of the Civil War, David enlisted as a Sergt. in Co 'G' 59th Reg't Tennessee Vols. C.S.A.; where he served as surgeon in Col. Eakin's 1st Battalion. He was captured and taken prisoner at Vicksburg around May 18th 1863. Sergt. Gaston was paroled July 6th 1863. On his way home, Sergt. David Gaston died near Byrum about 10 miles below Jackson, Mississippi on August 22, 1863. A letter from the man that buried him was sent to his now widowed wife and six children.

KIA: Feb 19 1863 {Railroad Accident Southern Railroad Train Wreck {Drowned} Enlisted: Mar 15 1862 Madisonville Tenn. {59th Tenn Mounted InFantry Co G.}CSA. at 3:00 a.m on the morning of Feb 19 1863 the Mississippi southern left the depot in Meridian Miss. the train was headed for the battlefield at Vicksburg Miss. where the confederate forces were in desperate need of reinforcements against the forces of William T. Sherman Union Army ,aboard the train abt 100 passangers mostly confederate soldiers and a paymaster for the confederate goverment .The Train engine ran off the track as it entered the Chunky Creek Bridge,weakened by flooding, and plunged into 15 Ft'of the icy cold waters ,many were killed on impact & others drowned.

William lived in Monroe County, Tennessee when he enlisted. He died near Vicksburg May 4, 1863 (CSA Records). Gaston Letters indicated that he died of dropsey, which could be any kind of swelling. It is unclear if this was from a wound or sickness.

Edmond Houston Benton enlisted in Company H., 59th Volunteers of the Confederate Army on 14 April 1861 in Tennessee.

Married Elizabeth Jane Land, sister to Confederate soldiers, Tillman, Allison, & James Land also of the 59th. Another brother-in-law William, served in the 62nd Tn. Company H : John B. Cobb, William M. Cass, Edmond H. Benton, Co. 'H'. Mustered in at Athens, McMinn County, April 14, 1862. Paroled at the surrender of Vicksburg July 4, 1863.

My Great-grandfather was C.O. of 'H' Company, but I know very little of his service or what battles he was in. I saw a picture of him once and it got lost because at the time we didn't know who it was. He resembled General Lee when the picture was made about 1895 (gray beard and the way his hair was combed.) He is buried in an unmarked grave in Leighigh, Okla. next to his son John A. Cobb who was a local physician.

Tombstone states he served in Co. K, 10 TN Cavalry, CSA. Muster Rolls for original companies have been lost. He is listed in Co. H, 59th TN Mounted Infantry.

I have full company rosters developed from the National Archives holdings integrated with each and every uncovered Pension Application, soldier and widow. Some wartime letters, newspaper reports, partial diaries. Some postwar information including some obits and some veterans' success stories and social contributions. All in all, the 59th was a very gifted outfit which included many outstanding individuals.

William L. McCarver is listed as William L. McCaron in the Tennesseans in the Civil War books. I have copy of muster roll paper that says William L. McCarver see also William L. McCaron. He is buried at Camp Chase in Columbus, OH.

18-year-old Thomas R. Land of Monroe County, Tennessee enlisted at Athens, Tennessee on Feb. 23, 1863. He was captured while hospitalized at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. His father, William Marion Land was from South Carolina. His mother was Mary Ann Seacrest. They were married in Monroe County, Tennessee on Aug. 17, 1843. John A. Russell, John S. Duckworth, Co. “K” 59th Tennessee Infantry mustered in at Athens, McMinn County, May 1, 1862, with some men from Polk County. No Further Record.

Searching for any information on unit, battles, etc.

Records also spell Pierce and misread middle initial as 'S.' Captured at Vicksburg and paroled. Told of eating mule meat and pea bread during siege. Also told of filling an old uniform with straw and holding it up for the Yankees to shoot at. Stationed along southeast perimeter of town.
