Ezekiel C. Clarkson was born in Grainger County, Tn in 1829. He was married with three children when he joined the 39th Tennessee Mounted Volunteer Infantry in 1861, Col. W.M. Bradford Commanding. He survived the war and later moved to Collin County, Texas where he died in the 1880's.

Jesse Moore Rodgers is my Great Grandfather, He enlisted inFeb. 1862 in Dandridge, Tennesse with the 39th Infantry / Later renamed the 39th Mounted Infantry after the battle of Vicksburg where he like others was captured and then paroled. hE WAS ABLE TO CATCH UP AND REJOIN remnants of his co. and continued to fight for the confederacy, but he was recaptured in jefferson TN. ON dEC. 23, 1864, They kept him at Point Lookout Maryland til the end of hostilities where he was exchanged'. He left Tennesse after the war and move to the Dallas,Texas area where he lived until 1922. From all i heard and stories,,,i just hope and pray i am half the man he was. ROBERT LEE ROBERTS

Andrew (my great-great grandfather)is buried under a C.S.A. 39th Tenn Mounted Infantry Co. G headstone in the Wanette Cemetery in Wanette, Oklahoma.

A native of Beech Creek in Hawkins County, he enlisted March 18, 1862 at Bulls Gap (Rogersville Junction). According to his daughter, my Grandmother, Bessie Ball Maxwell, John was color sergeant of the regiment from near its inception until he was captured wounded at the Battle of Morristown (TN) in 1864 after having surrendered with Stevenson's Division and been exchanged at Vicksburg. He spent the balance of the war as a prisoner at Camp Douglas, Ill., where he lost his leg to gangrene.

My ancestor was originally a private, but promoted to 1st LT. He endured the siege of Vicksburg and was paroled there. He was fortunate enough to be atthe Battle of Piedmont, in which the 39th suffered horrible casualties for the amount of troops involved. After the war he resided in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he helped build the University of Arkansas.

My Great Grandfather from Jefferson TN original unit 31st TN Inf changed to 39th TN mounted Inf.

Enlisted Jefferson County, Tn (possibly Talbolts Station?) March 20, 1862 for 1 yr. Re-enlisted May 3, 1862. On detached service January and February 1863. Roll for May & June 1863 states that he died. (Col. W.M. Bradford's Reg't Vols. 31 Tenn. Inf)

Surrendered Asheville, North Carolina April 26, 1865. Brigadier General C. L. Stevenson`s Division, Colonel T. H. Taylor`s Brigade, composed of the 3rd, 46th Alabama, 3rd (Vaughn`s), 39th, 59th Tennessee Infantry Regiments and the Rhett Artillery. These three Tennessee regiments remained together throughout the war. Company K : Henderson Hix, Moses J. McLendon, Co. 'K'. Enrolled at Sweetwater, Monroe County, March 21, 1862. Soldier`s Rank_In Private Soldier`s Rank_Out Private Ellison Land : Regiment Name 3 (Lillard`s) Tennessee Mounted Infantry : Records filed as 3rd (Lillard`s) Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment. Organized at Knoxville, Tennessee, May 29, 1861; mustered into Confederate Service June 6, 1861; reorganized May 14, 1862; surrendered at Washington, Georgia, May 9, 1865. Company H Joseph C. Boyd, Joseph Marr, William H. Rudd, Co. 'H'. Men from Monroe County. This company was later divided into two companies, one of which became 2nd Co. 'K'. Allison was paroled at Vicksburg July 4, 1863. Along with brothers James and William Land.

Meredith fought with this unit with his brother, Larkin, and brother-in-law. Both his brother and brother-in-law died at Vicksburg. Larkin, most likely, while as a prisoner. Unknown when the brother-in-law died. Before Vicksburg, this company made a 700 mile trip from Tennessee into Kentury and back. They may have showed up at Perryville the day after the battle ended or may have actually been in the battle. Not sure. After losing his relatives and with such great hardships being in the Confederacy, Meredith chose to return home to his wife and 10 kids after Vicksburg.

Enlisted in Captain Hix''s Company as First Sergeant in 1861. Completed the War as a Second Lieutenant at Asheville, N.C. in 1865. Was captured and paroled at the surrender of Vicksburg in 1863 with the 31st (W.M. Bradford''s) Tennessee Infantry.
