6th Vermont Infantry

Drafted in the summer of 1863. Was assigned to the 6th Vermont, then engaged at Spotsylvania. Just four days after joining the command, on May 18, 1864, he was killed by a shell fragment which ''passed through his body''.

Enlisted as a Corporal on 4 September 1861. Mustered in Company D, 6th Infantry Regiment Vermont on 15 October 1861. Promoted to Full Sergeant. Killed on 10 July 1863 at Funkstown, MD.

Wounded at the battle of Savage Station. Discharged for wounds in 1863.

Sent to Washington D.C. hospital on 28 Sept.1862. Returned to company 8 Dec. 1862. Promoted Sergeant 30 March 1863.Wounded in action 10 July 1863, Battle of Funkstown, Maryland.In general hospital July- October 1863. Returned to company November 1863. Wounded in action 1 June 1864 at Battle of Cold Harbor,Virginia. Died of wounds 3 June 1864. Originally buried at 6 Corps field hospital near J. Leary's farm, Cold Harbor.In 1866,remains moved to Cold Harbor National Cemetery, Mechanicsville,Virgina. Stone marker # 359 E.E. Burroughs Sgt. VT. (Section A )

A underage soldier who enlisted at the age of 15 on 19 March 1862. He was mortally wounded via gunshot on 29 June 1862 at the Battle of Savage's Station and died that day in the field hospital. His brother Cornelius Putnam was in the 8th Vermont Infantry. He was my 1st Cousin 5 times removed.
