Born June 5, 1833 at Lorraine, Jefferson county, New York, the son of Jonathan Fairbanks and Wealthy Davis.
Enlisted August 29, 1862 at LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He stood 5 ft 7 in and had blue eyes, dark hair and sandy complexion. He was mustered-in September 5, 1862 at Madison, Wisconsin. Sometime during July and August 1863 he was absent performing escort duty. Promoted a corporal on May 1, 1863 and a sergeant on February 15, 1865. Discharged on June 14, 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee.
He married Mary Madora Matilda Hewitt on February 25, 1869 at New Hampton, Chickasaw county, Iowa. They had the following children: Jesse Foncel, David, Ella Christina, John Jenning and Leroy.
Died June 2, 1906 at LaCrosse, Wisconsin. By occupation, a Mississippi River Pilot, being considered one of the best known pilots of the upper river region.
