Willard Walker was born October 16, 1839, in Varysburg (Sheldon Township), New York. In 1855, at age 16 he migrated with his family to Richland Wisconsin. on April 9, 1861 (i.e. three days before the firing on Ft. Sumter), he enlisted with a semi-local Wisconsin militia, the Watertown Rifles. His personal notes go on to say that he “mustered in” with federal forces (i.e. Third Wisc. Volunteer Infantry) about a month later. He and his two brothers, Levi and William (“Wim”), were eyewitnesses and combat participants in the Civil War. Respectively, they fought, were wounded, and died in its most significant battles, Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Levi (Iron Brigade) gave his life at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863; Wim (fifth Wisc. Volunteers, Company H (Scott Guards)) was seriously injured at Chancellorsville . Willard was at all three battles and many others. After service at Resaca in 1864, he took six months off to get married back in Wisconsin and then returned to his colleagues in Savannah to march north with General Sherman. He was at the final Battle of Bentonville, NC, and marched with the unit to participate in the grand victory parade inn May 1865. In about 1880 he moved with his wife and children to the remote Township of Myron in Dakota Territory. Until his death in Pennsylvania in 1913, Willard was periodically confined to veterans’ hospitals, for service-related medical problems

My 2nd great grand uncle. Enlisted as a Private in Company D, 3rd Infantry Regiment Wisconsin on 22 Apr 1861. Killed on 9 Aug 1862 at Battle of Cedar Mountain, Culpepper, VA, USA

Entered into service at Mayville, Wisconsin on May 20, 1861. Wounded in the Corn Field at Antietam Creek (Lost Left eye). Discharged due to disability on February 7, 1863

Frank was my mother's paternal great grandfather's brother.
