“Gettysburg: A Paterson boy Killed at Gettysburg. Among those who lost their lives at Gettysburg was a young man named Andrew Miller, whose family formerly lived in this city, having kept a tea store in Broadway. Removing to Wisconsin, he entered the regular service of the United States, in which served a number of years, and was honorably discharged. Subsequently he assisted in raising a company of the sixth Wisconsin regiment of volunteers, in which he was offered a commission; but preferred to remain in the ranks, with the grade of orderly sergeant. He participated in the peninsular campaign and the engagements in Western Maryland last year. At Gettysburg he fell mortally wounded. Edward David Calkins was born 21 June 1843 in Pemberville, Ohio, Wood County, Moved to Lake Co. Ill, In 1846, and to Wisconsin in 1857. He enlisted 19 Nov 1861, Company A 6th Wisconsin Infantry. He was in the battles of the Peninsular and Battles up to and including the battle of Antietam.

Enlisted 5/10/1861, Left service in 1864 Died in 1908 and is buried at the Los Angeles National Cemetery. After reviewing the action of the Iron Brigade, I'm amazed he made it through.

Bodley was killed in action 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg. In Phil Cheek's History of the Regiment he states that Waller said that Bodley Jones went for the flag in the charge and had it in his possession when he was killed, Waller further allegedly said that he took the flag from Bodley and took it and turned it over to the proper officer and he also said that if Bodley had not been killed then he would have gotten the Medal of Honor instead of me (Waller). This is believed to be the only source that claims that Bodley had the flag in his possession when he was killed. The men in his company referred to him as brave Bodley Jones. Bodley is buried in an unmarked soldiers grave at Gettysburg

George Morgan Jones is listed in Phil Cheek's book 'History of the Sauk County Riflemen...' also in the obit of his father Horatio Gates Jones as being in Company A, 6th Wisconsin, he was discharged 22 May 1862 - disability He was my great great grandfather

He was born 27 January 1840 and died 22 November 1880 of disease contracted during the war. He enlisted 10 May 1861 in Company A 6th Wisconsin with three of his brothers. He served with the company for a year when he contracted a disease which so disabled him that he could not serve in the infantry so he was transferred to heavy artillery. He died of that same disease at his home in Sauk County, Wisconsin

Thompson was the brother of Bodley and George Morgan Jones who I added previously. Thompson was born 30 April 1817 and died in Sauk County, Wisconsin 29 May 1864 He died of disease contracted during his service with the Iron Brigade. He enlisted 28 May 1861. There were five Jones brothers in the service. Brother David Horatio was also in company A of the 6th Wisconsin according to the father's obituary

Stephen Long ( March 1 1834 - Jan 24 1903), served May 10 1861, discharged Dec 8 1862, was a brother of Pvt Mark B. Long, d. Nov 1864, buried Chattanooga National Cemetery (qv). Submitted by Ronald Land, Scotland, 1st cousin 3 times removed of both.

John Myers was drafted into the Wisconsin 6th Infantry on 16 Nov 1864 in Buffalo County, Wisconsin. He was shot in the leg on 31 Mar 1865 at Petersburg, Virgina and taken POW. He was mustered out on 24 May 1865. His younger brothers, Joseph and Tinkey Conrad, served with the Minnesota 5th infantry.

Gottlieb fought at the battle of Hatcher's Run where he was wounded. He lived from 1835-1920 and is my great great great grandfather.

L.B.Raymond was my great-grandfather (maternal). Born 1836 in New York state. Educated in Wisconsin. Prior to enlistment in June 1861, was a newspaper reporter in Chicago. Joined the 6th Wisconsin Infantry Reg. Elected sergeant of Co. K. Medically discharged in Nov. 1862. Moved to Hampton,IA in 1865 and was a newspaper editor. Active in GAR and was republican candidate for Lt. Governor in 1906. Died 1911.

Enlisted 29 Oct 1864. Died in Louisville, KY in 1865. Born 7 Feb 1835 in Ohio. Son of Thomas and Eleanor Ward. Married Julie Potter, daughter of Lyndon and Lucy B Potter. He died of Typhoid fever.

On Dec. 25, 1863, at the height of the Civil War, he enlisted in Company H, Sixth Wisconsin Infantry, at Fountain City, and being mustered in as a private at Madison, Wisconsin. His first experience at the front was at Culpepper, Virginia, the regiment being assigned to the First Brigade, Third Division, Fifth Army Corps. After serving for a year and a half Mr RAITZ was mustered out at Jeffersonville, Indiana and returned home to Fountain City. During his career as a soldier he took part in some hard fought battles, including those of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Hatch's Run, North Ann River, Spotsylvania and Laurel Hill. He was present at Appamattox Court House and at the Grand Review in Washington, DC.

His allegiance was to the Union. He enlisted in Company 'I' with Levi L. Tongue on 7 March 1864. he was wounded on June 18 1864, at Peterburg, VA. He was discharged on July 14, 1865, and listed as 'absent, sick at M. O. of Regt' on official documents.

Drafted in October 1864. Mustered out with the regiment in July of 1865. Hospitalized from February to April of 1865. Family history in Germany (Prussia), and Wisconsin is well documented.
