John Wilhelm (William) Liebenstein fought in the Civil War from 1864-1865. He took part in the battle of Atlanta and was with Sherman on the famous march to the sea. He lived from 1845-1924. He is my great great great grandfather.

4th Great Uncle - Private, Corporal John Held, Company D, 26th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Born in 1839 in Germany (Prussia), he enlisted into Company D of the 26th Wisconsin 'Sigel Regiment' on August 19, 1862 while residing in Racine, Wisconsin. His occupation was listed as cooper. Described at enlistment as having gray eyes, light hair, a light complexion, standing 5 feet, 5 inches in height and having a slender build. Mustered in on September 17, 1862. Assigned to the XI Corps during the fall of 1862, and in reserve during the Battle of Fredericksburg that December. Regiment participated in the Mud March in January of 1863, and fought in the battles of Chancellorsville, Virginia and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Promoted to the rank of Corporal on July 1, 1863. Skirmish at Funkstown, Maryland. Engagements at Citico Creek and Missionary Ridge, Tennessee. Regiment transferred to the newly formed XX Corps in April of 1864. Fought at Buzzard Roost Gap, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Cassville, Burnt Hickory, Dallas, New Hope Church, Pine Mountain, Golgotha Church, Lost Mountain, Muddy Creek, Noyes' Creek, Kennesaw Mountain and Kolb's Farm, Georgia. Killed in action on July 20, 1864 at the Battle of Peachtree Creek, Georgia. Originally buried on the Peachtree Creek Battlefield. My great-great-grandfather was a German immigrant and farmer. He served the Union Army from 6/8/1862 until he was mustered out on 6/20/1865. Possibly fought at Gettysburg.

4th great uncle, born 1837 in Carbonear, Newfoundland, Canada and died 1909 in Ludington, Michigan.

He was wounded at Gettsburg and New Hope Church Georgia

From his Sheboygan Falls Herald obituary dated 2/18/1899: He answered President Lincoln''s service call in 1862, enlisted in Co. H. Twenty-sixth Wisconsin volunteers, and served to the close of the war. He participated in the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg. Lookout Mountain, Mission Ridge, Resaca, and Peachtree Creek and was with Sherman in the Atlantic Campaign.

I'm still learning about my 2 great grand uncle, but came across this site and felt I should add his name. He was from Bohemia, Czech but was a German.

Charles Behling was my great grandfather. All that he experienced and witnessed must have tormented him to the end; he took his own life shortly after admission the the Milwaukee Soldiers Home in 1895.

Born on March 2, 1836 in Heiligenzell, Ortenaukreis, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, he enlisted into Company K of the 26th Wisconsin 'Sigel Regiment' on August 21, 1862 at the age of 26 while residing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His occupation was listed as painter. Regiment assigned to the XI Corps during the fall of 1862, and in reserve during the Battle of Fredericksburg that December. Engagements at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Funkstown, Wauhatchie, Citico Creek, and Missionary Ridge in 1863. Regiment transferred to the newly formed XX Corps in April of 1864. Fought at Buzzard Roost Gap, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Cassville, Burnt Hickory, Dallas, New Hope Church, Pine Mountain, Golgotha Church, Lost Mountain, Muddy Creek, Noyes' Creek, Kennesaw Mountain, Kolb's Farm, Peachtree Creek, in the Siege of Atlanta, and in the Siege of Savannah in 1864. Participated in engagements at Lawtonville, Goldsboro Road, Averasboro, Bentonville and Mill Creek in 1865. Mustered Out on June 13, 1865. Died on April 14, 1913 in Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin. Brother of Union soldiers Ferdinand Seitz, 18th Wisconsin, Charles Seitz, 39th Wisconsin, and Fidel Seitz, 1st Nebraska.
