18th Georgia Battalion Infantry

Edward Ambrose Papy was born 3/22/1838 in St. Augustine, Florida. Son of Jose Papy and Rafaela Oliveros. By trade Edward was a printer. He was wounded in the chest at Sailor's Creek, Virginia, April 6, 1865. Was admitted to 2d Division of Depot Field Hospital, 5th Army Corp, Army of the Potomac, City Point, VA. Died 4/18/1865; buried at City Point National Cemetery, Hopewell, Virginia. Grave #C, plot 3970. Private Papy was my great-great-great uncle, and brother-in-law of Captain Gilbert C. Rice.

Gilbert C. Rice was born ca.1837 in Taliaferro County, Georgia. He was the son of Thomas D. Rice and Sarah Ann Burroughs. By 1860 he was residing in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, where he married Anita T. Papy, a native of St. Augustine, Florida, on 9/15/1861. Captain Rice was killed in battle at Sailor's Creek, Virginia, April 6, 1865. Buried on the battlefield, his remains were disinterred the following December and buried at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah on 12/31/1865. Mrs. Rice was my great-great-great aunt. She never remarried.
