Ozias was from New York but had moved to Illinois before the war. His wife's name was Eunice Beadle. He enlisted in August 1862 as a corporal, but was advanced in rank to QM Sergeant by the end of the war. His unit was connected to Sherman's campaigns in South Carolina, where Ozias was injured. It had been raining heavily, and Ozias was accompanying a heavily loaded wagon full of supplies along a muddy road. His companion, another QM Sergeant, left him to do some brief business at the train depot. After he left, there was a problem with the wagon and it fell over on top of Ozias. He lay there for an unknown period of time before being discovered and saved. The injury he received plagued him the rest of his life, though the fact that the road was so muddy probably saved his life- and by the time of his death he walked very painfully, bent almost double. Still, after the war he was able to work and first moved to Michigan, were he found that the malaria he had suffered while in the army made him unfit for the climate. He then moved to Shuyler, Nebraska, where he helped settle the town. From there he moved to Kansas, where he lived for the rest of his life. At one point (in Kansas), his home burned to the ground and with it, all of his wartime paperwork and his wedding certificate. This caused numerous problems with his pension, so his file at the National Archives is complete with letters explaining his wounds, his service, and information about his marriage. Testimonies are also included that provided references for his character.
