Stanford's Battery

Buried in the Sherrill Cemetery, east and south of Paynes, Mississippi in Tallahatchie County. First three children died of Yellow Fever, two within days of each other. One boy that did survive was my great great grandfather: William Richard Crenshaw, my mother's mother's father. He married Addie Jane Fonda and his brother married her sister, Lillie Fonda, they were daughters of Anthony Cornelius Fonda, another Confederate Veteran of the 2nd Partisan Rangers, creating a slew of double first cousins. Alford was born 24 June 1844 in Grenada County, Mississippi. He enlisted 6 Nov. 1861 in Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi. at about age 17. He has 11 cards in his archival file. His first fight was at Shiloh. Assigned to M. Smiths and Eldridge's Battery of light artillery. They were engaged in the Kentucky Campaign and the Atlanta Campaign from Murfreesboro to Atlanta. The battery was captured at Nashville. He died 10 Sept. 1909 at Crystal Springs, Copia Co. Miss. and is buried in the Oxford Memorial Cem. in the Saint Peter's Section. We are related by marriage

Charles was born 20 July 1837 in Grenada, Greneda County, Mississippi. [ Grenada County separated from neighboring Yalobusha County in 1835] He enlisted 6 Nov 1861 for one year as Private and soon was appointed Bugler. He has 12 cards in his archival file. He was in the fight at Shiloh, The Kentucky Campaign and Atlanta Campaign. Captured at the battle of Nashville. Reconstructed and fought until the end of the invasion. Surrendered at Citronella, Ala. and paroled 10 May 1865 at Meridian, Miss. He died 24 Aug 1924 and is buried at Pecan Grove Cem. McKinney, Collin Texas. We are related.

My great-great grandfather M. J. McDonald joined from Grenada, Miss., November 1861 though in the 1907 and 1911 enumerations of Confederate veterans living in Carroll County, Miss., he gave 1862 as entry year into Stanford's Battery. It's my gleaning that SB didn't actually see fighting until 1862. Matthew John was born Nov. 1, 1824 in South Carolina, and he came with other family members to the Carroll-Yalobusha (Miss.)area in early to mid-1830s. He's buried in Friendship Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Carroll County's 'Little Texas' area on land he once owned.

Enlisted Feb 28, 1862 at Columbus, KY. Commended in Official records at Battle of Resaca. Surrendered at citronelle, AL. Discharged May 10, 1865 Meridian, MS. Nicknamed 'Gus'.

Capt. Thomas Jefferson Stanford organized Stanford's Mississippi Battery in 1861 in Grenada, Grenada, Mississippi. Capt. Stanford was killed May 15, 1864 at Resaca, Georgia during the defense of Atlanta.
