79th New York Infantry

He lived for a short time in Grafton, MA and then moved with his family to Janesville, WI where he served as a mail carrier until his retirement in 1914. There is a family story that the ''highlanders'' were Scots and would march to battle in kilts...can anyone confirm or deny this?

Enlisted 13 May 1861 Mustered out 3 May 1862 Wounded

mustered in as private in ny city at age 24 for 3 yrs to co H on 2/2/1864;transf to co A on 7/31/1864; to co B 7/31/1864. Promoted to corporal on 6/1/1865. Mustered out with co on 7/14/1865. Served as a company cook & I have a notebook w some co recipes.

Robert was an immigrant from Londonderry, Derry, Ireland. He came with his parents and sister, Sarah in 1838 to US and lived in NY. They were Presbytarian and he was married to Catherine O'Connor. He died from illness when with the 79th and is buried at the National Cemetary Camp Nelson, Kentucky. He had 4 children.
