4th Alabama Infantry

He joined the Confederate army, the Fourth Alabama Regiment, in 1861 and was Surgeon of his regiment. He was promoted to Surgeon in the Confederate States Navy and transferred to Mobile, AL. At the close of the war he returned to his home in Mississippi. He moved to Grayson County , Texas , in 1869. Dr. Graves was an eminent physician. He practiced medicine at Whitesboro, Texas for the remainder of his life, except four years. He was, by the appointment of President Cleveland, the Surgeon and Physician for the Indians. During these four years he was stationed at South McAlester, Indian Territory. He also served as representative from Grayson County in the State Legislature of Texas.

John Asberry Nichols, transfered to the 4th Ala Vol.Infantry from the 11th Fla Inf Regt.

Born 1841 probaly Pike Co. AL At 20 he enlisted Co.E of 4th Alabama Vol. InfantryCSA at Sparta, now Evergreen, AL His records listed Brooklyn, AL as hometown. His CO was Pinck Bowles. His company was very much in the thick of action. Engagements listed in records are: Ethans Landing, Seven Pines, Fredericksburg, Fort Hugger, Suffolk, Spottsylvania, Crutchfield Farm, Hanover Junction, Mechanicsville Road, Charles City Road, Cold Harbor, Howlet House, Petersburg, Deep Bottom, Frizzles Mill, Fort Harrison, Fort Gilmer, Darbytown Road, Williamsburg Road, In his record was listed 2 months of recruting service for Brig. Gen Whiting and several months as a wagon driver. He was hospitalized in Winchester Va. Henry records show Henry absent without leave from 19 Sep 1863 to Mar. 1864. During this time Nov 8,1863 he married Mary Elizabeth Sterns. They had a daughter, Netie Ann, born Oct 9,1864. Henry returned to his unit and remained on the roll until Jan25, 1865 when he is listed as a deserter. Desertion was very common during this period of the war. His unit had been near Richmond for months with inadequate food clothing, ammunition and supplies. He had a sick wife at home with a 3 month old child. Henry and his brother John Asberry Nichols,also in the same unit either surrendered or was captured at Bermuda Hundred and sent to a POW collection point in City Point,VA. He was then sent to Washington DC. On Feb. 1 1965 he was then transported to Pensacola, Fla. It is not known if they were transported as POW's or freemen. It is not known what happended to his dau. Netie Ann after she married a Mr Brown prior to Henry's death on 30 Apr 1883. Henry's first wife Mary Elizabeth died Jan 8,1867. Their son Alonzo P. Nichols died two months later in March 1867. Henry then married Sarah Eugenia Baston( Her Father was killed in the WBTS). They had four children: William H. Nichols Jul25,1870-Aug16,1870, Mamie Melissis Nichols May 1875- Feb 21 1889.Henritor Eugenia Nichols Aug 13,1879-Dec29 1964, Walter Baston Nichols Apr24,1882-May11,1934.

James like many of his family joined at Sparta, Ala. on 25 April 1861, enlisted by Capt. Bowles. He is mustered into Confederate Service at Lynchburg, Va. by Major. H.L. Clay on 7 May 1861. He receives a new pair of shoes. In December he is issued a blanket. A Regimental Return Card for June 1861 shows he is sick in hospital at Winchester. James was in the 1st Battle of Manassas & battle of Etham's Landing. He is wounded at Seven Pines and is sent home on Wounded Leave. He returns to his unit in time for the Battle of Hazel River, Va. He is wounded again and again sent on Wounded Leave. He dies of his wounds on 8 Sept 1862. The records do not show place of death. Remarks on card: Born Ala. Occupation [grocer] nearest P.O. Sparta Ala. He is abt. 29 years old and single.

Joseph and two of his brothers enlisted on 25 April, 1861 at Sparta, Alabama. He was mustered in at Lynchburg, Va. His record is large. He is wounded at least three times and is engaged in at least 19 major battles. He is wounded at 1st Manassas on 21 July 1861 near Catlett's Station. A CMR dated Jan thru April 1862 he is back in his company. He appears on a list of casualties in 3rd Brigade [Laws]in fighting near Richmond Va. on 27 June and 1 July 1862. He is wounded at Gettysburg, [shot in the leg] exchanged at Camp Lee, and is home on wounded leave. Back in his company in time for the fight at Gains Farm where he is again wounded and went on wounded leave again. He is again on leave but returns for the battle at Fredricksburg. He is back in his company and is promoted to 4th Corporal on 14 Sept. 1864. His unit is surrendered at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.

William enlisted 25 April 1861 at Sparta. Enlisted by Capt. Bowles. He mustered in Confederate Service at lynchburg, Va., remarks : received one pair of shoes. CMR July-August 1861 states that he was mortally wounded on 21 July 1861 at Battle of Mansassas. He died on the 30th. He was shot in the leg and bled to death. It is noted that there are 9 other Thomas men in this Alabama unit. Lewis [21],S.S.M in Co K., Joseph A. Co E., John T [18 years old], James H., James C.,Henry C. [17 years old], George W. [18 years old] and C.C. Thomas. This war is where the phrase {Band of Brothers] is a true statement.

Blassengame enlisted with the 4th Alabama Reserve on August 7, 1864 at the age of 47, by Major W. M. Stone. He was a private in Captain Snowden's Company of Reserves. Described as Age,47; eyes,grey; hair,dark; complexion;florid (ruddy); height 5' 9 1/2' Blassengame was taken prisoner by the 1st Brigade, 2d Cavalry Division during the month on April, 1865-probably after the fall of Columbus. He wife reported on her pension application he was in Atlanta when war ended. He walked home to Monroe County.

He jumped into a creek which flowed into Donigan’s Slough, just above Stenson’s Hollow in Muscle Shoals, AL. He hid in the creek all night and was able to get away the next morning. 1840-1863. Commander of Co. G until his death at the battle of Chickamauga. He was the father of Capt. Thomas Wilson Billingsley of the 30th Miss. Infantry who died at Stones River, Murfreesboro, TN. He had been promoted immediately prior to his death at Chickamauga, saying in a letter home (perhaps as a joke with an element of truth to it) that every man who could read and write had been killed, except for him, and that is how he got his promotion.
