Matthew Cullers Fenn - Private   
Matthew was born 22 Oct 1842 in Clayton, Barbour Co. Ala. He enlisted at Clayton on 15 May 1861 in the Old Co K 5th Ala. Infantry which became New CO A of 5th infantry. His cover card states some of his records are under M.M.C. Fenn of which there are 43 cards. He suffered several medical episodes of disease and exhaustion, Measels, chronic diarrhea and reoccurring fever. In Aug 1862 he is sent home on sick furlough for 30 days. His Regiment saw action at Yorktown, Seven Pines, Cold Harbor, Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg, Boonsboro, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness and was captured in the trenches of Petersburg on 2 April 1865. He was sent to Point Lookout Md where he was released on 12 June 1865 after swallowing the yellow dog. He was the father-in-law of my 4th cousin 4 times removed. He died 4 Sept 1898 and is buried at the Mount Zion Cem. in Louisville, Barbour County, Alabama. I pray his soul rests in peace.

This archive says he enlisted when he was 17, was a farmer, single at the time, and from Calhoun County. Lists Georgia as his state of birth. His Widow 'N.K. SHELL' or Nancy Kizar Ramsey allplie for pension in St. Clair County, AL on 24 July 1900. Engagements: Present at Chancellorsville 3 May 1863.

JONATHAN WHITEHEAD WILLIAMS - Captain   
Capt. Williams served in the Greensboro Guard. He wrote articles about his time with the unit, that was published in the local newspaper in the early 1900. Capt. Williams was born in 1840 to Charles Williams & Jackie Whitehead Wiggins. He married Carolyn Avery in 1864 and had 9 children; Edwin (m. Nancy Ann Susan Blakeney) , Carlos/Carl (m. Blanche Murphree), Lemuel (m. E. Page Harris), Hope (married Patton), Mae (m. Dave Bell), Lucy (married John Magruder Jefferson), Ora (married Douthit), Nettie (m. Ira Barnes) & Carrie.
Capt. Williams managed the Greensboro poor house and died in 1908.

'At the outbreak of the war he joined the Co. 'H' 18th Alabama, the company being commanded by Capt. Hamner. He was elected Lieutenant and served for some time, but later resigned and joined in Nov. '62 Co. 'D' of the 5th Alabama in the army of Northern Virginia, this company being commanded by Capt. Jonathan W. Williams, now of Greensboro, Ala. Capt. Williams declared the deceased, after long comradeship with him, the best and purest man that he had ever seen, and said that as a right-hand bower to the Chaplain he was a power in Moralizing the regiment.' Milo was from Grove Hill, Clark Co. Ala. At age 23 he enlisted in the 'Grove Hill Guards' until 1 Jan 1862 when it became Co I 5th Regt. Ala. Inf. He was wounded in the battle of Boonesboro, Maryland in 14 Sept and sent on wounded furlough. He rejoined his unit and appears on a POW listing dated 10 June 1865. He was the husband of my 6th cousin 3 x removed.

Thomas M. C. Bryant - Private   
Enlisted May 15, 1861, Clayton, Alabama (Barbour County). As there was another Thomas M. Bryant (Corporal) in the 5th Alabama at the same time, he changed his official name on military records to 'M. C. Bryant'. The unit traveled to Pensacola, Florida, for equipping and training, then to join Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. While the 5th was en route to the Battle of First Manassas, he was mildly wounded at a skirmish at Farr's Cross Roads, VA. While recuperating, he developed pneumonia and was medically discharged on Jan. 11, 1862. He was paid a discharge and travel voucher of $63.66. He later traveled to Navarro County, Texas, where he and his wife, Harriett, owned a ranch until her death, after which, he lived out his life with his daughter, Maggie Allen Bryant Sterling, her husband, and their children in Wortham Texas (Freestone County). He is thought to have died between the 1900 census (on which he is listed) and 1910 census.
