Volunteered and enlisted at 32 years of age on March 20, 1862 from Tallapoosa Co, Al. Went in training at Loachapoka, Al., in Co. A, Al 47th Inf Regiment with his brother Edmund Belcher Langley. The 47th was ordered to Richmond Va on 6/14/1862 without arms. There it was attached to Tolliver's Brigade, Stonewall Jackson's Division at Green Springs, Va. He was made Orderly Sargent and was initiated into battle at Cedar Creek, Va on 8/9/1862. Served in 21 engagements and was not wounded or captured. Surrendered at Appamattox Courthouse, Va, 4/9/1865.

my 3rd great grandfather : W. Pulaski Bruce was born April 27, 1836 in Greene Co., Ga. W. Pulaski Bruce enlisted as a Private in Company D, 47th Alabama Infantry and was listed as a Gunsmith in a report dated December 4, 1862. The 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Loachapoka, Alabama, in May, 1862, and moved to Virginia in June. Most of its members were drawn from Chambers, Tallapoosa, Cherokee and Coosa counties. During the war it was assigned to General Taliaferro’s, Law’s and W. F. Perry’s Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The 47th fought in many battles of the army from Cedar Mountain to Cold Harbor, except when it was with Longstreet at Suffolk, Chickamauga and Knoxville. It participated in the Petersburg siege north of the James River and the final campaign at Appomattox. Private Bruce died on August 19, 1912 in Troup Co., Ga. and is buried at Hillview Cemetery in LaGrange, Ga.

Documentation found at Ancestry.com at US Civil War Soldiers 1861-1865 file number M374 roll 23.

The 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment was mustered into service in May of 1862, at Loachapolka, Alabama, and was first ordered to go to the western theater of operation in Mississippi. Upon reaching Montgomery, the Regiment was redirected to Virginia. They reached Virginia in June, and quartered at Camp Lee near Richmond. He enlisted as a private in Company G, 47th Alabama Infantry regiment, C.S.A., on May 11, 1862 and served until April 1865. He was wounded at Spotsylvania, Virginia during the war. Burial: Shiloh cemetery in William B. Bankhead National Forrest Lawrence county Alabama.

Lindsey B Gilbert - Corporal   
Lindsey B. Gilbert was born about 1841 in Georgia and was the son of William Gilbert and his wife Sarah. Lindsey enlisted on 12 May 1862 at Loachapoka, AL along with his brothers, Isham, and Williamson. Lindsey and his brothers served in Co. H, 47th Alabama. Lindsey B. Gilbert saw action at Cedar Run, was sick at 2nd Manassas and Sharpsburg, saw action at Fredericksburg and was captured at Gettysburg on 2 July 1863. He was sent to Ft. Delaware in mid-July 1863. While at Ft. Delaware, Lindsey contracted a lung infection and died 9 January 1864. Some of his records, indicating his imprisonment and illness at Ft. Delaware are transcribed as L.B. Gilbert and T.B. Gilbert interchangeably. Lindsey Gilbert was initially buried on Pea Patch Island in January 1864 and later re-interred at Finn's Point National Cemetery, Salem, NJ. His burial location is Sec. CM, Site 794. His name is listed as T.B. Gilbert in the Finn's Point Cemetery records.
