Volunteered and enlisted at 32 years of age on March 20, 1862 from Tallapoosa Co, Al. Went in training at Loachapoka, Al., in Co. A, Al 47th Inf Regiment with his brother Edmund Belcher Langley. The 47th was ordered to Richmond Va on 6/14/1862 without arms. There it was attached to Tolliver's Brigade, Stonewall Jackson's Division at Green Springs, Va. He was made Orderly Sargent and was initiated into battle at Cedar Creek, Va on 8/9/1862. Served in 21 engagements and was not wounded or captured. Surrendered at Appamattox Courthouse, Va, 4/9/1865.

Surrendered at Appamattox Courthouse, Va, 4/9/1865.

Enlisted at the age of 15 in 1862. The regiment was sent to Gen Stonewall Jackson. He served until Appomattox when he stacked arms in 1865. Organized at Loachapoka, May 22, 1862, the Forty-seventh reached Virginia late in June. Assigned to Gen. Stonewall Jackson's corps, the regiment was brigaded under General Taliaferro, with three Virginia regiments and the Forty-eighth Alabama. A few weeks later the regiment passed through the ordeal of battle at Cedar Run, where it lost 12 killed and 76 wounded, or nearly a third of its force present. At the second Manassas the Forty-seventh was again engaged, and lost 7 killed and 25 wounded. It was present at Chantilly and the capture of Harper's Ferry; entered the battle of Sharpsburg with 115 men, and lost every commissioned officer present on the field, mustering 17 men the next morning under a sergeant. The regiment wintered on the Rappahannock and witnessed the repulse of Burnside at Fredericksburg. Transferred to the brigade of Gen. Law -- Fourth, Fifteenth, Forty-fourth, Fifty-seventh, and Forty-eighth Alabama -- Hood's division, Longstreet's corps, the Forty-seventh lost several men in the fight at Suffolk. Rejoining the main army, the regiment marched into Pennsylvania, and poured out the blood of its bravest men at Gettysburg. Two months later the corps was transferred to north Georgia, and the Forty-seventh lost very severely at Chicamauga. It took part in the investment of Knoxville with light loss, and in the privations of the winter campaign in east Tennessee. Rejoining the Virginia army the regiment fought with severe loss at the Wilderness, and was in the brilliant charge on Warren's corps at Spottsylvania, where the brigade opened the battle. In all the subsequent operations around Richmond the regiment took part, and in the grim defences that begirt Petersburg it endured the perils and privations of the last sullen and persistent struggle. As part of Perry's brigade, the Forty-seventh laid down its arms at Appomattox, about 90 strong.

Robert W. Nail is my great (x4) grandfather. He lived from Aug 1834 to 1907. Son of James S. Nail and Deborah Nail. His regiment (47th Alabama) was one of the units tasked with taking Little Round Top at Gettysburg. The attack was repulsed multiple times. The unit was also engaged in many other key battles as part of the Army of Northern Virginia.

my 3rd great grandfather : W. Pulaski Bruce was born April 27, 1836 in Greene Co., Ga. W. Pulaski Bruce enlisted as a Private in Company D, 47th Alabama Infantry and was listed as a Gunsmith in a report dated December 4, 1862. The 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Loachapoka, Alabama, in May, 1862, and moved to Virginia in June. Most of its members were drawn from Chambers, Tallapoosa, Cherokee and Coosa counties. During the war it was assigned to General Taliaferro’s, Law’s and W. F. Perry’s Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The 47th fought in many battles of the army from Cedar Mountain to Cold Harbor, except when it was with Longstreet at Suffolk, Chickamauga and Knoxville. It participated in the Petersburg siege north of the James River and the final campaign at Appomattox. Private Bruce died on August 19, 1912 in Troup Co., Ga. and is buried at Hillview Cemetery in LaGrange, Ga.

John Calvin Jones served with 47th Alabama infantry regiment, company D as a private. He was born at Oak Grove, Geneva, County Alabama on May 13 1843. He died in Geneva County Alabama on March 20 1921. He is buried at Wesley Chapel united Methodist church, Geneva Co Rd 41, Geneva County, Alabama. Documentation found at Ancestry.com at US Civil War Soldiers 1861-1865 file number M374 roll 23. He is my great great grandfather.

The 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment was mustered into service in May of 1862, at Loachapolka, Alabama, and was first ordered to go to the western theater of operation in Mississippi. Upon reaching Montgomery, the Regiment was redirected to Virginia. They reached Virginia in June, and quartered at Camp Lee near Richmond. He enlisted as a private in Company G, 47th Alabama Infantry regiment, C.S.A., on May 11, 1862 and served until April 1865. He was wounded at Spotsylvania, Virginia during the war. Burial: Shiloh cemetery in William B. Bankhead National Forrest Lawrence county Alabama.

Daniel, Thomas J., 3rd Sgt., 5th Sgt. Company H, 47th Alabama Infantry Resided in Milltown, Alabama and enlisted in Cussetta, Alabama on May 5, 1862 at age 30 and was a farmer by occupation. Reduced in rank at his own request on July 1, 1862. Promoted to 5th Sergeant on September 23, 1862. Died in service on January 20, 1863. Lindsey B. Gilbert was born about 1841 in Georgia and was the son of William Gilbert and his wife Sarah. Lindsey enlisted on 12 May 1862 at Loachapoka, AL along with his brothers, Isham, and Williamson. Lindsey and his brothers served in Co. H, 47th Alabama. Lindsey B. Gilbert saw action at Cedar Run, was sick at 2nd Manassas and Sharpsburg, saw action at Fredericksburg and was captured at Gettysburg on 2 July 1863. He was sent to Ft. Delaware in mid-July 1863. While at Ft. Delaware, Lindsey contracted a lung infection and died 9 January 1864. Some of his records, indicating his imprisonment and illness at Ft. Delaware are transcribed as L.B. Gilbert and T.B. Gilbert interchangeably. Lindsey Gilbert was initially buried on Pea Patch Island in January 1864 and later re-interred at Finn's Point National Cemetery, Salem, NJ. His burial location is Sec. CM, Site 794. His name is listed as T.B. Gilbert in the Finn's Point Cemetery records.

William was about 35 years old when he joined Co. I 47th Alabama Infantry. He was a farmer with three children. His unit was moved to Virginia where they were assigned to Major General Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson's Corps. He saw action thru out the war and was one of about 90 men remaining in his unit when it surrendered.

Richard was born 3 Feb 1845 and was abt 16 years old when he joined the fight. He was seriously wounded at Chickamauga. He survived the war and drew a pension as a resident of Schley, County Georgia.
