Charles fought thru most of the war and was present at Appomattox. His brother Cunningham also served in the same CO. Most of this company was made up of neighbors. Modern census records read like the roster. The muster book is in the Alabama archives. There is also an excellent history of the 48th AL by the late William Stanley Hoole

Cunningham served thru the war and was paroled at Appomattox. He is listed as wounded twice but recovered and rejoined his company. He lived to a ripe old age and is buried in Cullman county in Holly Pond.

David was 27 years old when he enlisted on 7 April 1862. He catches pneumonia and dies in Chimborazo Hospital #4 at Richmond Va. on 10 May 1863. He has $40.00 in his pocket.

Joseph enlisted on 7 April 1862. He is 24 years old. He is a patient in the hospital at Lovingston Hospital in Winchester Va.for diarrhoea in Aug 1863. He is seriously wounded at the battle of Chickamaga on 19 Sept. and died of his wounds at Marietta Ga. on 3 Dec. 1863.

Nathan was about 19 when he joined at Warrenton along with his brother Joseph Presley. He was in every engagement his unit fought. He was wounded at Chicakamauga on 19 Sept. 1863 and again at Spotselvania 8 May 1864. The surgeons report states that he was seriously wounded in that fight . His record ends here. He survived the war and died in Hopper, Montgomery Co. Arkansas.

Richard enlisted as a Pvt. at Warrenton Ala. 7 April 1862. He was abt. 20 years old. He is the husband of my 3rd cousin 4x removed. He was wounded at Cedar Run on 9 August 1862. He is with Capt. Aldridge's Co., Jackson's Division. He is admitted to CSA hospital on 11 Aug. 1862 and discharged on the 20th of Oct. CMR for July - August 1864 lists his rank as 1st Sgt. He survived the war and died Hayden, Blount Co Ala. on 8 April 1885

D. W. Hammett was the 4th son of James and Clarissa Hammett.
He was born at Spartanburg S.C. about 1830 and moved to DeKalb co. Ala. before 1840. He married Nancy Sample in St. Clair co. Nov. 5 1860, and they had 2 sons, Albert F. and W.D. Jr. Enlisting with his brothers Perry and Tilman in Co. B 'Wills Valley Guards' in Apr. 1862. The 48th was sent to Va. and placed in the brigade of Alex. G. Taliaferro, under Stonewall Jackson. They fought at Cedar Run, 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg where Daniel was wounded. He died Jan 1 1863, and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. His 2nd son being born only 7 days before his passing. Nancy moved with her kinfolk to Izard co. Ark. about 1872 and raised her boys. She was granted a Confederate Widows Pension from Arkansas in 1901, and died in 1909. Nancy is buried at Flatrock
cemetery in Izard county.

Perry was b. in Spartanburg S.C. Apr. 28 1833 and moved to DeKalb county Ala. before 1840. He was enlisted April 7 1862 in Co. B at Warrenton Ala. by Capt. Jesse Burgess. The reg't was sent to Virginia and placed in a new brigade commanded by Alex. Taliaferro. Their 1st action at Cedar Run was a hot one for the green reg't and they broke under the assault, before finally rallying. They fought again at 2nd Manassas, this time much more cooly, and had become veterans by the battle of Sharpsburg. Fredericksburg saw the wounding and subsequent death of bro. Daniel Wilson Hammett. Perry was himself wounded in the fighting around Suffolk Va. Severe fighting was seen at Gettysburg's Devil's Den and the following Sept. at Chickamauga. A small but sharp engagement took place at Wauhatchie Tn. near Chattanooga. The reg't was part of the assault on Ft. Sanders at Knoxville Nov 25, 1863 where Perry and bro. Tilman were captured. Sent 1st. to Camp Chase Ohio, they were soon transferred to Rock Island prison in the Mississippi River. Perry spent the remainder of the war in the POW camp, He took the oath, and was paroled May 16 1865 He began receiving a Confederate pension on May 30 1899, and died in 1922. Perry is buried near Tilman in Aurora Cemetery in Etowah co.

James M. Garrard served in Co. C with his brother John F. Garrard and brother-in-law Jessie Miller. He was captured at Spotsylvania May 6, 1864 and sent to Pt. Lookout, MD until exchanged Feb. 18, 1865.

John F. Garrard served in Co. C with his brother James M. Garrard and brother-in-law Jessie Miller. John was wounded in his right shoulder at the Battle of the Wilderness May 6, 1864.

Jessie Miller served in Co. C with his brothers-in-law, John F. Garrard (wounded-Wilderness) and James M. Garrard (captured-Spotsylvania).

Amon Sparks, son of Zerah and Luanna (Horn) Sparks, was born about 1842 in South Carolina, and was eighteen years of age and living with his parents when the 1860 census was taken of Marshall County, Alabama. On April 7, 1862, he enlisted as a private in Company C, commanded by Capt. W. S. Walker, of the 48th Regiment Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army. He died of measles at Auburn, Alabama, on May 15, 1862.

On December 7, 1862, Zerah Sparks, father of Amon, received $39.30 from J. L. Sheffield as the settlement of his son's military account. On November 22, 1867, Marion Sparks, a justice of the peace, processed documents related to the death of Amon Sparks. The documents were signed by Zerah Sparks and witnessed by Russell Sparks.

Joshua A. Sparks, son of Zerah and Luranna (Horn) Sparks, was born about
1839. On his military record, he gave his birthplace as Gwinnett County, Georgia. He was married to Elizabeth Williamson on July 12, 1861, in Marshall County by Judge M. Gilbreath.

Joshua A. Sparks enlisted as a 2nd Corporal in Company C, commanded by Capt. W. S. Walker, of the 48th Regiment Alabama Infantry of the Confederate States Army on April 7, 1862, at Warrenton, Alabama. He was hospitalized for sickness and wounds at Winchester, Virginia, on August 9, 1862, but apparently he was sent home from there on a medical furlough. He died at his home on May 5, 1863. The cause of his death was recorded as “Alabama fever.'

According to the military records of Joshua Sparks, his widow, Elizabeth, made a settlement with the authorities by which she accepted compensation for his transportation from Richmond, Virginia, to Warrenton, Alabama, (1550 miles) in lieu of money due for his furlough. Daniel C. Williamson witnessed her signature. We have no further records of this couple.

Meredith [“Med”] Sparks, son of Zerah and Luranna (Horn) Sparks, was born on April 11, 1842. He gave his birthplace as Greenville, South Carolina, on his military records. On April 7, 1862, he enlisted as a corporal in Company C, commanded by Capt. W. S. Walker, of the 48th Regiment Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army, at Warrenton, Alabama. His brothers, Joshua and Amon, enlisted on the same day.

Many years later, on May 29, 1898, Med Sparks applied to the State of Alabama for a pension for his military service in the Confederate States Army. He stated that he had served as a private in Company C, 48th Regiment Alabama Troops. While in discharge of his duties on August 9, 1862, he had been wounded in his left side at the Battle of Cedar Run, Virginia. He also stated that he was a farmer and that his post office was McVille, Alabama. (Present-day McVille is a little crossroads community with roads leading to Albertville, Guntersville, Scottsboro, and Collinsville. )

Med Sparks was examined by Dr. W. E. Quin in June 1899 who found that he had been struck by a piece of shell in his lower chest just to the left of his stomach and slightly below his heart. Sparks's heart was enlarged and affected his entire system so that he could not labor. Dr. Quin reported that Sparks claimed that he had been discharged three times from the military service on account of the wound.

Med Sparks's application for a pension from the state of Alabama was approved, and he was placed in the Third Class of pensioners on the DeKalb County Pension Roll. A census of Confederate soldiers was taken in 1907 by the state of Alabama, on which Med Sparks was listed as having been born on April 11, 1842, near Spartanburg, South Carolina. He had enlisted in the Confederate States Army at Warrington [sic], Alabama, (no date given). He had been wounded in the Battle of Cedar Run, Virginia, on August 1, 1863. He was discharged on October 27, 1863, at Emory College, Washington County, Virginia.

On January 15, 1915, Sparks applied to be placed in the Second Class of pensioners, giving as his reason that he was now over seventy years of age. He stated that he had been born in North Carolina on April 11, 1842.

His mother, Nancy Kincheloe McPherson, from my maternal ancestors/relatives in East Tennessee. 3 brothers served in the 29th Ala.Inf. Their father was a veteran of the War of 1812: George McPherson was a Captain in the East Tennessee Militia during the War of 1812. He fought in the Battles of Horseshoe Bend and New Orleans. He served in the following units, Colonel Brown's Regiment, Colonel Bunch's Regiment, and Captain Henderon's Mounted Gunmen.

Youngest of the 6 Hammett brothers, Tillman was born July 4, 1834 in Spartanburg S.C. Tillman enlisted in Co. G under Capt. John Morange at Gadsden May 10 1862. Arriving at Auburn Alabama, the company was mustered into service May 22nd, and reached Richmond Va. abt. June 1st. Tillman was present for all the battles of the reg't until like bro. Perry he was captured in the assault on Ft. Sanders Nov. 25 1863. Tillman was sent to Camp Chase Ohio, then on to Rock Island Prison. During that icy winter Federal authorities came around offering food and clothing to any prisoner willing to enlist in the Union army. Given the proviso that they would be employed on the frontier and NOT go south to fight against the Confederacy, many prisoners accepted the offer. As told by Dee Brown in his book 'GALVANIZED YANKEES' there was a great deal of debate among the POWs regarding the merits of this offer. Many soldiers drew straws. The loser enlisted the other stayed. Tilman lost. But now receiving Federal clothes and food, he could smuggle some of the provisions in to Perry helping his brother survive. Tillman went west with the 2 U.S. Volunteers to Ft. Riley Kansas where he remained until Aug. 28 1865. Discharged, Tillman came home to Alabama. He married Rebecca Engle in 1866 and raised a large family near Aurora.
Tillman received a U.S. Pension for many years before his death in 1916. He is buried beside Rebecca and close to brother Perry in the Aurora cemetery.

Captured near Bean's Station, Tn, November 1863. Confined at Camp Morton, died April 28th, 1865 at Camp Morton. Buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.

Served in Company I, 48th Alabama Infantry, Confederate Army. Received a pension until his death, which
was subsequently paid to his widow. Following the Civil War, he adopted the surname Gabriel.

Killed at the battle of Chickamauga Sept 20, 1863 ,Brother to Thomas J.Nunnelley who was wounded at same battle.

J.A. Smith b. 1831 Lunenburg,VA.
At thirty-two, Smith enlisted as a 1st corporal 05-30-1862, Calhoun Co. Alabama.
He died of Typhoid Fever 04-09-1863, Wayside Hospital, Richmond, VA. It is unknown where he is buried. His widow, Mrs. Nancy Smith, filed a death claim on 06-25-1863, which was not verified by C.S.A. until 01-21-1865. Would very much like to know where he is buried, as well as details concerning his service. He was my great-great-great grandfather.
