Assigned as Regimental Blacksmith, applied for and was approved for Confederate pension from State of Ark. in 1913 and collected same until his death in 1926 @ Shreveport, La. He attended several Confederate reunions.

Paul served with his father Silas Rose (seargent)in Company A of the 45th Arkansas militia before joining the 27th. The 45th was responsibe for rounding up members of the 'Arkansas Peace Society' and either pressing them into service or detraining them for trial. Also Google 'brothers war' to see the other Rose and Whorton families in the civil war. Several of the other Rose boys fought in Union mounted infantry units in Tennessee

G, Shaler's Regiment (or the 27th Arkansas). Initially assigned to Camp Bragg, AR. Was a 2nd Sgt in Co. G in Feb 63. Elected 3rd Lt. April 19th, 1863 by Special Order #31, HQs 5th Brigade. Assigned to duty by General Order #6. Brigade 2nd Sgt until April 5 1863 and 1st Sgt until April 20, 1863. Replaced 1st Sgt Weatherford who had died 5 April 1863 at Little Rock. On recruiting duty from 1 Dec 63 to 29 Feb 64 by Dist. HQs Special Order 172, dated 1 Oct 63. Shaler's Regiment, 5th Brigade, Price's Division, Department of the Trans-Mississippi.

He was captured in Izard County and sent to the Military Prison at Little Rock. He was released on 7 May 1865 after 'Swallowing the Yellow Dog'. He died 17 Jan 1929 in Everton, Boone Co Ark. May God rest his soul.

Barney Kemp Riggs (B.K. Riggs in official records) was a brother to Lt.Col. James Monroe Riggs, F&S, of the 27th. He enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant at Richwoods, Arkansas on July 6, 1862 at the age of 32. He died in a Little Rock, Arkansas hospital on February 17, 1863. He was one of my great-great uncles. This confederate veteran is the uncle of the later notorious western gunslinger who carried the same name in his honor.

James Monroe Riggs - Lt. Colonel   
Lt.Col.James Monroe Riggs is my Sons of Confederate Veterans ancestor (Camp # 1923--Columbia, Missouri). He was formerly with the 7th Arkansas Infantry, Company H, as 1st Lieutenant and served with them at Shiloh. When his enlistment with the 7th ended, he later joined the 27th Arkansas Infantry, Company I, as Captain. He was later promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and transferred to Field and Staff. He survived the war and died in Texas in 1912.
