Born 1836 in White County, Ga. Son of Levi and Jemima Jackson. Enlisted on August 24th 1861 in 'White County Marksmen' Company C. 24th Ga Infantry. Service records show he was detailed as a Division teamster. He was a patient in Jackson Hospital, Richmond Va for most of October 1864 with a minie ball injury to his left hand. He lost a finger to this injury.
He returned to duty and remained with the 24th and was among the 60 men from 24th Ga, and 7 men from Company C, who were surrendered at Appomattox.
He returned to White County Ga after the war. He died in 1882 and is buried in Lawrence Cemetery in White Co. Ga. His youngest son Jesse was my grandfather

Private Nace Walls was born in Pendleton District, SC on 25 December 1820. He enlisted in Company E, 24th Georgia Infantry Regiment on 4 Mar 1862. He fought with this unit until his transfer to Company E, 3rd Georgia Sharpshooter Battalion on 8 Jun 1863. He remained with this unit through the rest of the war. He died on 15 January 1884 in Rabun County, GA. He married Nancy Jane Roach in 1839 and had several children, Clarinda, Willam, Drury, Martha, James, Nancy, Mary, and Davis. His son, Drury, fought in the 2nd NC Infantry regiment and in the 21st Georgia Infantry Regiment.

Captured at Strasburg, Va on October 19, 1864. Appears on roll of prisoners at Harper's Ferry, West Va captured by Sheridan's Forces. Sent to Point Lookout October 24, 1864. Arrived at Point Lookout Prison October 28, 1864. Exchanged February 13, 1865.


Appears on a Report of Prisoners of War, belonging to the Army of Northern Virginia, who have been this day surrendered by General Robert E. Lee, CSA, commanding said Army, to Lt. General U.S. Grant Commanding Armies of the United States. Done at Appomattox Court House, Va April 9, 1865.

He was engaged in 19 major battles and skirmishes before he was taken as POW on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg. Sent to Fort Delaware and on to Point Lookout Md. He was exchanged at Camp Lee near Richmond on 21 Feb 1865. He died 24 Aug 1931 at Desdemona, Eastland Co Texas and is buried at De Leon Cem. De Leon, Comanche Co. Texas. We are related on my mothers side by a very distant marriage.

Sidney Smith Crumley

Smith Crumley, my grt-grt grandfather, was 17 when he enlisted along with his 19 year old brother George in a company raised by Robert McMillan in Habersham(now White) county Georgia. They entered CSA service as Co. K 24th Georgia Infantry Regmt. They fought in all the major battles of the Army of Northern Virginia. Smith was wounded at Fair Oaks, and was later admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 3 with dibilitas and was not present at the battle of Fredericksburg, returning to the 24th on 17, Dec. 1862. In June 1863 he and his brother George were selected from the company ranks for transfer to the newly formed 3rd Georgia Battalion Sharpshooters, Co. B. Smith Crumley survived the war,lived as a Methodist minister, and farmer in White County, Georgia. He would become the last full-time gate keeper of the Unicoi Turnpike. He died in 1932, and was laid to rest next to his wife, Julia Anne, in the cemetery of the Chattahoochee Methodist Church in Robertstown Georgia, just north of the town of Helen.

S.L. enlisted Aug 24,1861 in Habersham Co, GA at age 38. He fought in all of the major battles of the 24th until he was captured on Aug 16,1864 in Front Royal,VA. He was taken to the Old Captitol Prison in D.C. then transferred to Fort Delaware. He arrived at Elmira Prison in N.Y. on Aug 28,1864, where he was imprisoned until Feb 1865 when he was released as a prisoner exchange. He then went to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond,VA where he was treated for pnuemonia and returned home to Habersham Co. He died Jan 27,1906 at the home of his son William,in Homer,Banks Co.,GA at the age of 82 and was buried along side his wife Caroline, in Amy's Creek Baptist Cemetery near Old Sautee, GA.
