BF Culpepper joined the CSA in Columbus, GA on Jul 2, 1864, for local defense in Pemberton's Cavalry. He was exempt at the time; probably as a war industry laborer. Sherman was just a little north of Atlanta. Since Sherman did not attack Columbus, I am assuming Benjamin joined the 36th Infantry. He was paroled after a year. His wife Nancy requested a CSA pension in 1907 in Alabama. Benjamin died in 1890. Her request was denied. Washington said there was no record of him serving in the 36th. In 1914, she tried again with affadavits from soldiers who served w/ him in Pemberton's Cavalry and was this time was successful. However, I have not found conclusive evidence of a document where he is on the 36th's roll. I would like to see a document.

Alexander was born 1 Feb 1843 in Alabama. In 1860 his family is separated and some members including Alexander are visiting relatives in Cherokee Co. Ga. in 1860. He has four cards in his archival file. He enlisted at Dalton Ga. on 15 Jan 1862 by Capt Cox into Broyles' company of Infantry. His company was captured at Vicksburg and after that his data is lost. He died 8 Mar 1906 and is buried at Ables Springs, Kaufman, Texas

Fought with Broyles' Regiment during the Chattanooga Campaign in 1863, captured sometime after the Battle of Missionary Ridge on Nov. 25, 1864. Released on parole Jan. 4, 1864 after making his mark (X) on an oath of allegiance to the United States at Nashville, TN. Returned home to Whitfield, GA.

Erroneously listed with last name 'Stuart' and 'Steward' in US Government Civil War Records. Brother of James W. Stewart, Co. A, 36th GA Inf Reg. Enlisted Jan. 15, 1862, at Dalton, GA. Fought at the Battle of Champion Hill, present at Siege of Vicksburg. Paroled on July 9, 1863 after surrender of Vicksburg on July 4. Fought with Broyles' Regiment during the Chattanooga Campaign in 1863. At some point transferred to Co. G, 36th GA Inf Reg. Listed as captured at Harper's Ferry, Jul. 10, 1864, and sent to POW camp at Elmira, NY, Jul. 25, 1864. Released May 29, 1865, returned to Whitfield, GA.

Leopold Sitzepfandt was a private in the 36th Georgia Infantry, B Company for the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. He was ultimately captured twice. He was from Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia and uncle to Gustavus Aldolphus Miller. He was born 1839 in Germany and brought to the United States as a small child. He Died 1869 in Dalton, Georgia after his health deteriorated from service during the Civil War. He served in the Southern Army from 1862 - 1865. He is mentioned in the book History and Records of the Miller Family 1472 - 1972 by Winnie Ruth Miller. She said 'He served with the Quartermaster during the Siege of Vicksburg.' She also said there were family stories of how 'Because of a great shortage of supplies, mule meat was used in this and many other battles.' Documents from the National Archives show Leopold Sitzepfandt was captured as a POW at Champion Hill (Vicksburg,Mississippi) on May 16th, 1863 and sent to Memphis, Tn. on May 25th, 1863. The documents show he was received at Fort Deleware, Del on June 9th, 1863, and paroled at Fort Deleware, Del. on July 3rd, 1863. He was then exchanged on July 4th, 1863. Pvt. Leopold Sitzepfandt was captured a second time near Dalton, Georgia on May 13th, 1864 during the Rocky Face Ridge / Resaca battles by Maj. Gen. George Henry Thomas' troops. Pvt Leopold Sitzepfandt was sent to Camp Morton, a Union prisoner-of-war camp located in Indianapolis, Indiana and and released on May 23rd 1865. The 36th Regiment, Georgia Infantry (Broyles'), was an infantry regiment organized with men and officers from Dalton, Georgia , during the winter of 1861-1862. It was sent to Tennessee, then moved to Mississippi where it served in T.H. Taylor's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. The regiment fought at Champions Hill and was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863. After being exchanged and brigaded under General Cummings, it fought with the Army of Tennessee from Chattanooga to Nashville, and ended the war in North Carolina. The unit was organized with 930 men, reported 43 casualties at Chattanooga, and totaled 267 men and 213 arms in December, 1863. In January, 1865, when it was consolidated with the 56th Georgia Regiment, 232 were present for duty. Few surrendered on April 26. The unit was commanded by Colonels C.E. Broyles and Jesse A. Glenn, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander M. Wallace, and Major John Loudermilk. In searching records his name is linked to the name Teapeort Lebzepssaner on the National Parks Service NPS.gov/civilwar/search . Also in several family records Leopold spelled his last name Setzepfand.

Love, James Andrew, Pvt., Co. C, Georgia 36th, Confederate: Birth: 05/29/1843 in Walker County, Georgia. Death: 05/16/1863 (19 years of age) in the Vicksburg Campain at the Battle of Champion Hill. There is a grave marker in his honor at Macedonia Cemetary in Villiow Georgia, Walker County where his Family lived.

Enlisted 03/11/1862 at Etowah, Georgia as a Private. The regiment fought at Champion's Hill and was captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. After being exchanged it fought with the Army of Tennessee. Coleman was captured and became a POW again on 05/13/1864 at the Battle of Resacca then transferred to Camp Morton POW Camp. Took Oath of Allegiance on 10/16/1864 and went home. Date of Death unknown. My 3rd Great Uncle.

abe bramblett joined the csa in 62 was involved in 5 battles as well as many contacts during his time in the war. abe was shot in the upper back in the battle of Bentonville n.c, he was shipped home to heal of his wounds and while home lee surrendered the confederate cause and j.a. bramblett did not have re-join his company

1st Lt. Thomas E. Jefferson died sometime during the Battle of Vicksburg. In his last known letter home he described the gathering Federal troops. He is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery

Aaron J. Sewell enlisted April 5, 1862. Captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi July 4, 1863, and paroled there July 9, 1863. Roll for October 31, 1863, last on file, shows him present. Aaron survived the war and was at the surrender in Bentonville N. Carolina.

Enlisted 4 Oct 1862 Killed at Vicksburg 15 Jun 1863 Body never identified

He served in the 36th Georgia Infantry Company F from April 10th, 1862 to June 15th 1863 where he died of wounds from the siege of Vicksburg that he received on June 1st. He was enlisted by Captain Morton. Salathiel was a brother of Walton Adams who had to swear he would not fight again as one of the terms of his capture, and release. In Feb of 1864 he was brought to a camp of instruction in Decatur for desertion according to once source I have. Whether desertion or honoring an oath is debatable. Not sure if Walton rejoined the fight later. The death of his brother must have affected him as well as the oath.

Surrendered at Vicksburg July 4th 1863. Paroled by Federals July 9th 1863. Had to sign paper not to fight again in exchange for parole. His unit fought at the Battle of Champions Hill.

His father Thomas Parks Hudson voted against succesion from the Union at an assembley to decide the issue. Captain of Company F.36 Regiment of the Georgia Volunteers. Taken prison near close of war, and was carried to Federal Prison on Johnson's Island in Lake Erie. Served in the state legislature and the county board of education. His brother Thomas P Hudson Served at Mannassas where he came down with Measles and Mumps.(From Book in Care of Yellow River Post Office)George Bayliss Hudson served at Vicksburg,was involved in the Battle of Champions Hill, Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga,Kennesaw Mtn, Atlanta etc. and was captured near Nashville, TN on December 16th 1864. Lots of letters and materials he wrote at Musuem of the South in Kennesaw, GA. Possibly some relation to Henry Hudson the explorer. Robert Thomas BRIDGES was my 3rd grandfather. He was captured twice, first Vicksburg, MS., second Tunnell Hill Ga., 1864. He was CM by US, found Guilty, sentensed to hang, but died natural cause 1899. The CM was his behind the lines Guerilla fighting in and around Tunnell Hill Ga area. He lived in Catoosa and Whitfield Counties Ga. Gerald Preas

Eli was born in 1846 and was 14 y/o when the aggressive invasion began. He had been born in Blount Co. Tenn. He enlisted 24 April 1862 in Co H 36th Regiment at Dalton. Ga by Capt Robert's for the war. He has 7 cards in his archival file. He is captured at Vicksburg on 4th of July 1863 and paroled on the 9th. He rejoined his unit and fought until the end of the war. His Regiment served first in Tennessee then sent to Mississippi where it was assigned to Taylor's Brigade. This regiment was later consolidated with the 56th Georgia. Battles: Champions Hill, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Nashville and into the Carolina Campaign. He married Mary Ann Dunn and they are buried at Calvary Baptist Ch. Crandall, Murray Co. Ga.

George Was a cousin to Elli Caylor / Kaylor: He only has two cards in his archival file and they do not give the circumstances or date of his enlistment. The only data shown is that on his July 1862 Regimental card he is on sick furlough in Georgia. He was born in Blount Co Tenn.. in 1832. He died of Measles in May 1870 in Murray Co. Ga. He was the father in law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.

Newton was born 12 July 1841 in Monroe Co. Tenn. He was 21 y/o when he enlisted for the war at Dalton, Ga on 24 April 1862 in Co H 36th Ga Infantry [ Broyles] He has 7 cards in his archival file. He was captured with the fall of Vicksburg on 4 July 1863. This unit was consolidated with and no other record for him has been found. He married Sarah C McDonald. He died in 1877 but have not found his grave. He was the father in law of my fourth cousin 3 x removed. Died at age 36.

A cousin, Pvt. Thomas J. Lackey (1836-1904) was from Murray Co, Ga. Applied for Confederate service pension from Georgia in 1901.

Miner, Daniel P. -- Private - August 4, 1863. Died of fever at Sweetwater, Tennessee, November 6, 1863.

This was my maternal great-great grandfather. Captured at Vicksburg and later wounded at Missionary Ridge.

From Georgia's Virtual Vault, Confederate Soldier's Application Under Act 1910. JR Chastain, Pickens County, GA enlisted in Co. L, 36 GA Inf Joined CSA May 1862 and subsequently was captured by USA and imprisoned Nov 1863 in Kentucky. Paroled with illness and sent home. In 1910, at age 70, JR Chastain was denied soldier's pension under ACT 1910. Notation made for deserter May 1964. Affidavit of two Freeholders and two fellow soldiers refuted saying JR served honorably in CSA.

Was back in the war at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on Nov. 25, 1863. Served until the last battle at Salisbury, N.C. on April 12, 1865. Only a hand full of these me surrendered on April 26, 1865.
