William Jasper Smith was my great-great-grandfather. He served with the 44th regiment, known as Weems Guards. He was wounded in Spotsylvania, Virginia May 10th, 1864. He was wounded again April 3, 1865 in Richmond, Virginia, where he was permanently disabled and sent home. William was married and had nine children. He lived out his life in pain from his injuries and was disfigured from facial cancer. He was humble and kind, always putting others before himself. William died in Atlanta, GA, Dec. 19, 1910.

Osborn and was wounded in the 44th Georgia's first battle at Ellison's Mill 26 June 1862. Recovered and wounded again at Gettysburg. Was at home on wounded furlough when he courted and married Florida Wray on 15 September 1863. This made him the brother in law by marriage to James C. Atkinson in Company I. Spent last his few years of life in the Confederate Soldiers' Home in Georgia. Died 11 May 1929 and is buried in Watkinsville.

Joshua was appointed 4th Sergeant when the company was formed in Spalding County, GA; he was subsequently promoted to junior 2nd Lieutenant. He was wounded and disabled at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in 1864, and returned home. He was captured at Macon, GA, in 1865. His brother Charles, also a member of Company E, was killed at Ellison's Mill. Joshua returned to farming with his wife Sarena following he war. The couple had three children living at home at the time of the 1870 Census.

Subsequently he was promoted to 1st Sergeant, and in 1864 he was transferred to Company I of the 13th Georgia Infantry Regiment. John was the younger brother of Lieutenant Elijah Manley and the older brother of Private Theodore Manley -- both members of Company E. He is known to have returned to Spalding County, GA, following the war and was engaged in farming in the Cabin district well into the 1870s.

Scarborough was promoted from 2nd Sergeant to Second Lieutenant in 1862. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House in 1864, along with Captain Connally, Lieutenant Scott, and other members of the company. Scarborough worked as a clerk for one of the richer farmers in Spalding County, GA, before the war. Nothing is known of Scarborough's activities after being released from Federal prison at Fort Deleware in 1865.

John H. Whitmire joined the C.S.A. 10 March 1862 and with neighbor boys traveled from Jackson County, GA, to a place of redezvous at Chattanooga, Tennessee. He formally enlisted as a private in Company G, 43rd Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Confederate States Army, on 10 May 1862 at Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was taken prisoner on 16 May 1863 in a skirmish at Bakers Creek, at Champion Hill, Vicksburg, Mississipi. On that day in Vicksburg, 380 were killed, 1018 wounded, and 2453 missing. He was taken to Fort Delaware, Delaware, and placed on a prison ship. Union Prisoner of war records show that he died 30 July 1863 and was buried at Finn's Point National Cemetary near Salem, New Jersey.

James C. Atkinson - Private |

Born about 1829 to family of James Atkinson in possibly Morgan or possibly Greene County. Married Theodotia Wray 13 September 1857 in Greene County. Was a farm overseer immediately before the war in Morgan County. James C. Atkinson enlisted in the Morgan County contingent that formed half of Company I, 44th Georgia. His lieutenant's diary places him in the fighting of 2-3 May 1863 at Chancellorsville. He was captured at Spotsylvania 10 May 1864. POW at Ft. Delaware until exchanged in March 1865 as a sick prisoner of war. Immediately entered the hospital and died in Richmond of disease on 27 March 1865. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery in that city, grave # W-487. His son William Lee Atkinson married Hattie Cornelia Jackson, the daughter of fellow 44th Georgia soldier Isaac M. Jackson. They are the submitter's great grandparents.

Son of Jesse B. Bowles and Jane (Bennett) Bowles. In 1850 he appears with his parents in the 160th Militia District at the southern tip of Greene County. Living in Greene County near Woodville in 1860. Enlisted as a Private in Greensboro on March 4, 1862. Wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2, 1863. While home on furlough he married Margaret M. Dennis in Greene County on February 10, 1864. Returned to Company K. Surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Moved to Putnam County and living in Eatonton by 1890. Died October 5, 1894 and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery near Eatonton.

John D. Copelan Born August 6, 1834 to Obediah and Sarah R. (Credille) Copelan. In 1850 he and his family lived in the 148th Militia District of Greene County in the area around Penfield. Appointed 2nd Sergeant of Company E, 3rd Regiment Georgia State Troops October 14, 1861. He completed his enlistment and then enlisted as a private in Company K, 44th Georgia Infantry Regiment on May 1, 1862. Appointed 2nd Sergeant July 12, 1862 and 1st Sergeant June 1, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Married Sarah E. Wynn in Greene County on November 3, 1865. Died February 19, 1905 and is buried in the Liberty Church Cemetery in Greene County.

John T. Hailes was my grandfather. He was born 31 January 1845 in Greene Co., Georgia.
Hailes, John T. - Enlisted as private in Co. E, 3rd Regiment, GA. State Troups 14 oct 1861. Mustered out at Savanah, GA April 1862. Enlisted as a private in Co. K, 44th Regt. GA. Inf. 18 May 1862. Left foot and ankle severely mangled when car was derailed, between Richmond and Staunton, VA. Appointed Musician Apr 1964. Surrendered at Appomattox, VA. 9 Apr 1965 .

My father who was raised to his sixteenth year by my grandfather and was his son stated that my grandfather, John T. Hailes, had a hole you could ''lay a hen egg in'' in his upper arm which he had received from a minie ball at Sharpsburg. I have found no record of his being hospitalized at any time, either for the train accident or the minie ball wound, but he must have been.

Brother to 44th Georgia soldier Isaac M. Jackson. Born 14 October 1843. Enlisted with his brother in March 1862. Captured at Spotsylvania during Upton's attack on 10 May 1864. Imprisoned at Fort Delaware. Returned home and married Adeline O'Neal, daughter of 44th Georgia Company K comrade James S. O'Neal, on 4 April 1867. Together they had 13 children. Died 25 March 1925, one of the very last veterans of the Civil War living in Greene County. Buried in Siloam Cemetery.

Isaac M. Jackson - Private |

Born about 1838 to family of James A. Jackson in Greene County. It is known from a sign-in book of the Wayside Hotel in Union Point, Georgia, that Isaac traveled home to Greene County in April 1863 and returned that same month to the 44th Georgia then in winter quarters west of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Isaac and his brother Andrew Franklin Jackson in the same company were both captured May 10, 1864 at Spotsylvania in Upton's attack on the Mule Shoe salient. He and his brother were held at Fort Delaware. After the war, Isaac married Sarah F. Smith, neice of fellow 44th Georgia soldier Asa McLellan, on 13 September 1866. He and Sarah had two children before her early death around 1870, one of them being the submitter's great grandmother Hattie Cornelia Jackson. Isaac died around 1880.

Enlisted in Company K on 1 October 1863 at age 34. Did not marry. Died in a Richmond hospital 31 July 1864. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond.

Detailed ambulance driver before Gettysburg. Captured during Upton's attack 10 May 1864 and sent to Fort Delaware as a prisoner. Exchanged in March 1865. Died 1 May 1917. Buried Siloam Cemetery in Greene County.
