55th Georgia Infantry

I am working on a biographical study of Baldwin and am in desperate need of primary sources and materials concerning the 55th until September 1863 and afterward the experiences of the members of the 55th at Camp Douglas.

Have no information on this distant relative. The surname Cowser, which may be a misspelling of Cowsert, is one of perhaps a hundred variants of the original surname Cossart. Would appreciate learning any information others may have on this soldier.

William T. Calhoun is my great Uncle, James S. Calhoun was my great grandfather. Both were captured at Cumberland Gap 8 Sept. 1863 and released from Camp Douglas Ill. on 14 June 1865.

Joseph was 24 years old. He enlisted on 17 May 1862 at Crawfordville, Taliferro Co Georgia. Another card says he enlisted at Lawrenceville. Enlisting for three years or the war in Capt. James M. Griffin's Co. 55th Georgia Infantry. This became Co B. They mustered in at Camp Stevens. Joseph became ill and never recovered his health. Sent to the hospital in Knoxville and transferred to the hospital in Atlanta, Ga. He was discharged by surgeons certificate on 23 Oct. 1862. Paid $59.50 cents at Atlanta on 23 Oct. 1862.

All I know about my ancestor is that he was first in Company I as a private and then in Company B as a 2 Lt. Other than that, I can find no other information on him.

Enlisted as a private in Co. D, 2d Battn. Ga. State Troops October 31, 1861. Mustered out at Camp Brown near Savannah, Ga. April 28,1862. Enlisted as a private in Co. B, 55th Regiment Ga. Inf. May 5, 1862. Captured at Cumberland Gap, Tenn. September 9,1863. Released at Camp Douglas, Ill. June 15, 1865. (Born in Ga. in 1845.) My great-grandfather.

I am researching my Peavy relatives from Dooly Co. They were in the 54th and 55th Georgia Infantry. I also had one A.Y. Peavy that served in heavy artillery.I am having trouble finding info on Byrd Y. Peavy. There were 6 brothers that fought in these units. I appreciate any info.

Jesse Peavy was discharged 24th April 1863 at Knoxville Tennessee.He was one of six brothers from Dooly Co. that fought for the confederacy.

Died of disease as a POW Company C, 55th Infantry Regiment Georgia on 1 Oct 1863 at Camp Douglas, Chicago, IL.

I’ve found records of him being Kia at Cumberland gap 1963. Family story’s say he died of pneumonia guarding prisoners.

JMV Williams was my great graet grandfather from Dooly County. Captured at Cumberland Gap,TN, POW, Camp Douglas,IL,paroled as guard at Andersonville until end of war.

Enlisted in 1862. Died at Kennebec, Maine on 1 Apr 1863. Not really sure how. Can't find evidence of any kind of skirmish on that day.

The family story was that he spent the war in an Illinois POW camp and walked back to Georgia barefoot after the war. Research shows that he was captured at Cumberland Gap, was imprisoned at Camp Douglas Illinois, and since most prisoners were shoeless, most likely did walk back to Georgia barefoot.

Alexander Hair is my great great uncle. He was a member of the 55th Georgia Infantry captured at Cumberland in Sept. 1862. He is buried near the Willis Lake in Miller County, Georgia.

James C Barbre enlisted on May 5 1862 Randolph County Georgia for 3 years. Served with the 55th Ga when captured on Sept. 9, 1863 at Cumberland Gap, Tenn. Prisoner of War until exchange at New Orleans La. May 4, 1865. After this he was on police guard duty, guarding prisoners at Camp Sumpter Ga and Florence S.C.(m266roll529)

Lewis Johnson Rigsby was first in 55 Company H,mustered out 5 May 1862,Re enlisted 17 May 1862,assigned to Company G,was captured at Cumberland Gap 9 Set 1863,sent to Camp Douglas,released when the war ended

Enlisted 5 May 1862 Randolph Co. Georgia. Discharged from Knoxville TN hospital 10 Aug 1862 – probably on surgeon’s certificate - reason unknown. Returned home. Enlisted in 55th Infantry Detachment 3 Mar 1864. Guarded Union prisoners at Camp Sumter, Andersonville GA for duration of war.

Fought in Kentucky Campaign – August 1862. Captured with majority of regiment at Cumberland Gap Tenn on 9 Sep 1863. Transferred to military Prison at Louisville KY, then Camp Douglas in Chicago. Died of typhoid fever at Camp Douglas on 10 Nov 1863.

William B. Spurlock was held POW at Fort Douglas in Chicago after the surrender at Cumberland Gap. He was released in June of 1865 and took three months walking back home to Randolph Co, GA.

Orginially a member of the 5th GA INF, John enlisted in the 55th on 17 May 1862. No record of his capture, but he survived the war.

Enlisted in Company H, 55th Georgia Infantry of the Army of Tennessee. Brothers James Winfrey Mitchell and William T Mitchell also enlisted in the 55th.

Returning to east Tennessee, it served in that department until surrendered with the rest of the garrison of Cumberland Gap in the summer of 1863. After exchange it was placed on detached service, guarding prisoners at Andersonville, Ga., and Salisbury, NC. In March, 1865, the detachments of the regiment were ordered to report to General Johnston in North Carolina, but the war ended before the order could be obeyed. John Cooper Smith was from Hogansville Georgia near Meriwether County. He was mustered in at Grantville GA. He was a guard in Knoxville TN and was captured in 1863 at Cumberland Gap and was a POW in Kentucky and then at Camp Douglas IL. He made it back and is the patriarch of a now large family that lives in East Tennessee near Knoxville. Ironic huh?

Isaac was a POW at Camp Douglas Illinois, where he died sometime between 1863 and 1865.
