Pvt. Charles joined at the beginning of the war in 'Smith's Legion' in Co. B, but later the legion was broken up and the infantry became Co. A, Gilmer Light Guards, in the 65th Georgia.
He fought with this unit through most of its engagements until he received a sick furlough at Dalton, GA and returned home to Ellijay. Before he could return, Gen. Sherman had started what would become known as his Atlanta Campaign, putting Pvt. Charles behind the Union Army. In making his way back to his unit, Pvt. Charles came upon the 4th Georgia Cavalry and rode with them for a short time until the order was given for all Confederates north of the Chattahoochie River who were detached from their units to join with Gen. Wofford and the Georgia State Troops. Pvt. Charles headed this order and served with Gen. Wofford until this force surrendered to the Union on May 25th, 1865. Pvt. Charles is buried with his family in the Ellijay City Cemetery, Ellijay, Ga.

James was born Feb 1842 in Gilmer Co. Ga. He was 17 in 1860. I have found his Cover Sheet in the Georgia Archives as serving in Co A Smith's Legion which formed the core of the new 65th Infantry Regiment. He enlisted 12 May 1862 and was transferred to the 65th. He fought from Chickamauga, The Atlanta Campaign, Franklin & Nashville. He mustered out 26 April 1865 at Greensboro, NC

Joseph Daves is my third great-grandfather on my father's side.

A.J. Hughes entered Confederate service in time to see his first battle at Chickamauga in September 1863. He served with his regiment, and surrendered in North Carolina in April 1865. After the war, he applied for, and received a pension for his military service. In 1915, he was admitted to the Confederate Soldiers Home in Atlanta, where he lived until his death on 26 April 1930.

He was my 3rd Great Grandfather.Fincher, J. M, -- Private in Inf. Battn., Smith's Legion, Ga. Vols., May 6, 1862. Captured at Danville, Ky., Jan. 2, 1863, and sent to Camp Douglas, Ill., prison. Transferred to Co. D, 65th Regt. Ga. Inf., Mar. 1863. Paroled from Camp Douglas, Ill., prison Apr. 4, 1863. Roll for Apr. 30-Aug. 31, 1864, shows him absent, sick in hospital.

Enlisted as a Private on 6 May 1862 at the age of 32.
Promoted to 2nd Sergeant on 15 August 1864.

Washington, on the 1860 census was 30 years old and living in Floyd County Ga. He was enlisted at Rome, Ga. 5 May 1862 by Col. R.H. Moore, Kelly's Brigade, Preston's Division. 1 Feb 1863 was appointed 5th Sgt. In Aug of 1863 was appointed to 4th Sgt. His Company was known as " Freemen of Floyd County". On 31 Aug 1864 he appears on a Hospital Roll as a patient at Shelby Springs, Ala. He was paroled at Greensboro, NC 1 May 1865. Battles: Vicksburg, Chickamauga, New Hope Church, Dallas, Marietta, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, Jonesborough, Franklin, Nashville, and many skirmishes. He was the father-in-law of my 2nd cousin 3 x removed Louisiana Pickett 1857 - 1955. He is buried in the Isham Cem. Fort Worth, Tarrant Co. Texas. May his soul be at rest.

He joined as a private in Co. F, Infantry Batt Smiths Legion, GA Volunteers 6 May 1862 in Rome, GA. The unit merged in to the 65th Regiment GA Infantry in March 1863.

Columbus' surname is also spelled Cozort and Cozzort. He was the younger brother of William Cuzzort (and various spellings) who was a member of the 6th Georgia Cavalry. Both of these units had their origin in the large outfit called Smith's Legion, which was broken down into separate units or cluster units in 1862 or early 1863. Columbus was put on medical leave in 1864 from the military hospital in Loudon, TN and apparently didn't make it back to the 65th. He is not listed as a deserter, though. 'French leave?' He had a widowed mother and several younger sisters trying to run a farm near Livingston, GA, and may have gone home to help. He is buried near where he enlisted, Foster's Mill(s), Floyd Co., GA.

Josiah Brewster was from Towns Co., GA and was detailed to work on a fort for defense of a bridge at Loudon, Tennessee.

Levi died on July 20, 1863 at a Civil War hospital in Knoxville, TN. Exact cause of death is unknown. Direct Desendants now live in the same area North of Knoxville, where Levi was stationed with the 65th.

born 1841 in buncombe co N. Carolina died 1924 in Fulton co. Arkansas Albert (Bert) also served in co. E 8th Regt. Ga. state troops 1861-62 along with his father John Dillinger and his uncle Henry Dillinger then enlisted Co. A Smiths Legion Partisan Rangers May 1862 to March 1863 when it became Co. H 65th Ga. Inf. Regt. Albert was wounded at Atlanta 7-22-64 and surrendered Greensboro N.C. May 1865.
