William, my 1C1R, enlisted in Co E, 5th Kentucky Infantry Regiment, CSA on 27 Sep 1862, in Gratz, Owen County, KY. Evidently, SGT Mefford was captured as a result of Grant's relentless campaign at Vicksburg on 04 Jul 1863 — the day after Lee's defeat at Gettysburg.* Since his trail doesn't surface until August 1870, when he was enumerated in the census. I'm still trying to find more information of his life and whereabouts.

He rejoined his unit in September, 1862 near Salyersville for the final month of service in this 12 month unit. He later joined with Sid Cook's band of Guerrillas who later became affiliated with the 7th Battallion as Co. G.
