A letter to the State of Kentucky, dated May 26, 1864 states 'We here certify that Ira Henderson is a member of the United Baptist Church of Christ in Allen County, Kentucky, known by the name of Puncheon Camp; and that the same Ira Henderson is in good standing in the Church; and is a legally ordained Minister of the Gospel. Therefore we, as The Church, recommend him, the same Ira Henderson to the World as a pious Minister of the Gospel. Done by order of the Church. Signed, James Eleson, Clerk, and Henry Roark, Moderator.' Ira was chaplain to Military Prison No. 4.
On Nov 21, 1864, Ira requested a leave of absence while his regiment was on furlough for twenty days, in order to see his family. Ira had not seen them in over a year, and Mary Anna had been very ill for over six months. Leave was granted. Mary Anna died in February, 1866, and was buried in the Old Puncheon Creek Cemetery.
