I have located the CSA gravestone for Pvt. Thomas E.L. Howle but have not located his military records. His gravestone shows he was with Co A. 1st La. Infantry. He was born in 1828 and died in 1864. He may have died as a POW as his gravestone is engraved with PH. POW I do not know what the PH indicates but may be a clue to the location of the Pow Camp. Further research is necessary to flesh out his records.

Injured at Gettysburg Battle of Culp's Hill. Leg amputated. David's Island NY as POW for 8 months. Prisoner exchange in March 1864 went to Richmond VA. At time of surrender he was in Georgia on his way home. Reached his home in New Orleans 2nd September 1865
Was made orderly sergeant after battle of Chancellorsville.
Was mayor of Baton Rouge 1898
Died 1907

Here is what I know, Mathew Joseph Meagher was a doctor from
born in Irland and living in New Orleans, Louisiana. He enlisted in 1862 .He was in the battle of Chancellorsville and was wounded. Sent to the 4th Division General Hospital Winder, Richmond, VA. from May 1863
until June 1864.

BENJAMIN SR. WAS A SERGEANT IN COMPANY F, 28TH LOUISIANA INFANTRY. HIS WIDOWS CONFEDERATE PENSION APPLICATION, FILED IN 1899, STATES THAT HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON APRIL 8, 1864 IN THE BATTLE OF PLEASANT HILL, LOUISIANA. THIS APPLICATION WAS WITNESSED BY W.S. ROBINSON IN JACKSON PARRISH LOUISIANA, ROBINSON WAS 1ST LT. OF CO. F. HOWEVER, ROGER BROTHERS SUSPECTS THAT BENJAMIN ACTUALLY FELL AT MANSFIELD, LA., THIRTEEN MILES TO THE NORTH, FOR THREE REASONS. FIRST, THE FIGHTING AROUND PLEASANT HILL TOOK PLACE ON APRIL 9TH, SECONDLY THE 28TH LA. REGIMENT TOOK EXTREMELY HEAVY CASUALTIES AT MANSFIELD AND WERE NOT HEAVILY ENGAGED AT PLEASANT HILL (BEING USED IN A RESERVE CAPACITY THAT DAY), FINALLY THE TWO BATTLES ARE MANY TIMES CONSIDERED TO BE THE SAME ACTION BECAUSE THE FIGHTING STARTED AT MANSFIELD LATE IN THE DAY ON THE 8TH AND CONTINUED MORE OR LESS AS A RUNNING FIGHT TO PLEASANT HILL ON THE 9TH. THE BATTLE IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE BATTLE OF MANSFIELD-PLEASANT HILL.

William M Pentecost was enrolled 26 Apr 1862 at Trinity, LA. On roll May 1-Oct 31 1862, listed as sick in hospital. Aug 10-Dec 31 1862 listed as Present on roll. Died 23 Jan 1863 in New Guinea, VA. Cause of death listed as pneumonia.

Enlisted as Captain of Company A ( Strawbridge's ) 1st Louisiana Infantry in 1861. Frederick was promoted to Major on Sept.30, 1861, later promoted to Lt. Colonel on May 23, 1862. Wounded in battle at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on Jan.3, 1863, later dying of his wounds on Jan.6, 1863. The 1st participated in the battles at Shiloh, Corinth, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Ezra Church, Nashville, Spanish Fort. The first surrendered at Gainesville, Alabama on May 12, 1865.
