Julius Keiffer - Musician
Julius Keiffer was born in Grethen, Durkheim, Pfalz, Bayern in 1842. He emigrated to New Orleans, then Clinton, LA, in November of 1857 where he lived and worked as a mercantile clerk in the cotton business of his brother-in-law, Samuel Kahn. He enlisted in Hunter Rifles, Company A, Captain E.A. Pullen commanding, in 1861. Company A and Company B were mustered in with the Fourth Regiment Louisiana Infantry, under the command of Col. H.W. Allen. This regiment saw its first action at the Battle of Shiloh. Private Keiffer was injured on the first day of the battle, April 6th,his ankle badly shattered by a rifle ball. He was honorably discharged several weeks later. Owing to the conditions in Clinton, LA, at the time of his discharge Julius emigrated to Mexico for the duration of the war. At the end of the war he joined a new family venture established in 1865 in Boston, MA, and New Orleans, LA, Keiffer Brothers Shoe Company, a wholesale shoe and boot business. Julius eventually left this business to engage in other ventures in the insurance and banking business, finally passing away in 1913 in New Orleans.
