George W Cockerham, born 1847, was my g-g-grandfather. He appears to have joined the 17th at Camp Moore in Sept 1861. On his widow's application for a pension she claimed (as supported by a statement by another soldier who served with him) that he also served in Ogden's Battalion under Lt. Co. Fred N. Ogden until the close of the war. This was a temporary battalion organized at Clinton on 6 June 1864 with three LA and three MS companies.
He married Sarah Elizabeth McDonald.

William was born in Washington Co. Illinois and his family moved to Louisiana when he was very young. He was listed as a mail carrier when the war began. He enlisted 29 Sept 1861 as Pvt. in Capt. J. B. Gibson Co. I 17th Regiment La. Inf. Enlisting at Camp Moore [ Training Camp [ Camp of Instruction] near Kentwood, Louisiana. This unit became Co A. He is also found in 2nd Co. K. The unit went thru numerous consolidations. The last being by special order 34 dated 3 Feb 1864 when it became 2nd Regiment Consolidated la. Inf. He saw action at Shiloh, Vicksburg where he was captured and paroled after taking the oath aka [Swallowing the Yellow Dog] he rejoined his Regiment and continued the fight at Port Gibson, and Pineville. Paroled May 1865. He moved to Texas to live with his son Albert and died 7 April 1902 in Sterling City, Sterling Co Texas. Believe he is buried in that city's cemetery in an unmarked grave.

Comrade Addison was born May 1, 1841; died November 21, 1924, at the advanced age of 83 years of age. He was born in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana; moved to Sabine Parish when six years of age, and grew to manhood. When war broke out between the states, he was among the first to volunteer. He enlisted in the Fourth La. Infantry early in 1861, and served in that Co. until 1862, when he transfeerred to the 17th Regiment, Col B, and served in that Co. until the close of the war.
Comrade Addison was in many hard fought battles; he was in the battle of Shiloh on the 6th and 7th of April, 1862, when it tried the nerves of men to stand, but Comrade Addison, like many ohters, stood in defense of what he though was right. He was also in the battle of Chickasaw Bayou, December 27 and 28, Port Gibson on May 1, 1863. He was actively engaged in the 40 days siege of Vicksburg. When the war closed, he returned to his home to begin life anew. Fellow Comrades, in viewing the past, we see that many of our Comrades have gone on, and we know that we too will soon be called to go, so let us live, that when the time comes, we will be ready.

William Walter Futch is my Great-Great-Great Grandfather. He died on April 8, 1862 in Hardin County, Tennessee, the day after the Battle of Shiloh ended. The 17th was attached to Anderson''s Brigade and saw action around the Shiloh Church and the Hornets Nest. Not sure if he died due to wounds suffered fighting or pnuemonia or measles. Both diseases were taking heavy tolls on the regiment as well as much of the army. I have not been able to track down any records of burial or cause of death as of yet.

On May 14 1862 W.L. Gulley enlisted in the Confederate Army at Monroe LA. On 18 Nov. 1862 he was transferred from LA 31st to Company C, 17 Reg, LA Inf. He was reported as present on the Company Muster Roll for Nov. and Dec. 1862 and Jan. and Feb. 1863. There is no further information in his service record file. We presume he returned home after the war but have no proof.

On May 23, 1862, he re-enlisted at Edwards Depot, MS. He was listed as captured and paroled at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863.
After his return to Louisiana, he married Martha Sanford; they had a son, Joseph Nathaniel May on June 1, 1867. Sometime before he died in 1869, James and Martha moved to Texas. It is unclear where he is buried. Joseph and his wife are both buried in Georgetown, Texas. His widow later remarried L. C. Hughes; she too is buried in Georgetown, Texas.

William R. May is my great-grandfather, son of Joseph Monroe May and Lucinda Pendarvis May. He was born on October 27, 1841, and died September 20, 1913, at the ''old home place'' in Caldwell Parish, Louisiana, where he shared his home with his youngest son, Joseph Cooley May, my grandfather. He married Pennie West on June 13, 1865; together they reared 10 children. he was a farmer and owned a cotton and grist mill. Both William R. and Pennie May are buried in Hickory Springs Cemetery at Hickory Springs Church, Jackson Parish, LA, not far from William R.'s parents.
He enlisted in September 1861 at Camp Moore, LA, with his brothers James and Pinkney. He fought in several battles, among them the bloody battle at Shiloh. He also participated in the siege of Vicksburg; he was captured and paroled July 4, 1863. Family tradition has it that he, his brother James, and a friend swam the Mississippi River to get to Louisiana and thus to get home to Caldwell Parish.

Family tradition has it that his family could hear the cannons firing into Vicksburg from their family home during the seige. Family tradition also holds that John D. Neal, Jr., was captured at Vicksburg but his name is not on the roles at the museum there. He possibly was detached with other members of the 17th elsewhere in Louisiana. Family tradition also states that he was at the Battle of Mansfield but this is unsubstantiated by any records I have been able to find. He did have his son, John Alexander 'Dunham' Neal, name HIS son Robert Mansfield Neal with the name of the battle encorporated into the name as an indication that he participated in the battle. It was a sort of 'coded message' for Southerners who were not on the roles but did show up at the battle to fight against an invading foe despite their oath to not bear arms until exchanged. There exists no further information regarding the truth of these claims beyond an oral tradition handed down in the family and all the 'old heads' are now long gone who could verify the truth.

Zacharias was born 14 Oct 1843 in Meriwether Co. Georgia. He has 4 cards in his archival file. There is no date given for enlistment. He is listed on a hospital clothing receipt roll dated 30 Jun 1864 while a patient at Cannon Hospital at La Grange, Georgia. It is noted that he is in Canty's Brigade. He is suffering from Typhoid Fever which continues to worsen. On 2 July 1864 he meets a medical examining board which deems him unable to fulfill his duties and grants him a 60-day sick leave. His regiment fought at Shiloh, Farmington, Atlanta and Carolina Campaigns. He married Cordielia A. Ward in 1865. He died 25 July 1938 in Coushatta, Red Rivere Parish La. and is buried at Zion Baptist Church. Fairview, Natchitoches, Parish. La. He was the father-in-law of my 3rd cousin 2 x removed.

James was born 14 Dec 1829 in Perry County, Alabama. He has 16 items in his archival file. He enlisted 12 Oct 1861 in Capt. W. A. Maddox's Co. [ Claibourne Invincibles] at Camp Moore in Tangipahoa Parish, La. He is detailed as a Teamster from 1 Mar to 1 April 1863, the pay was 25cents per day. He fought at Corinth, Shiloh and Vicksburg. The 17th won praise for the defense of the Chickasaw Bluffs in that battle. He was captured and paroled. There is no comprehensive history online for this unit. After Vicksburg It remained in La. engaging in a few skirmishes. He died 10 Sept 1917 and has a CSA stone on his grave at Aycock Cem. in Lisbon, Claibourne Parish La. We are related by marriage.

He was wounded at Shiloh and captured. Sent to hospital in Cincinatti, Ohio and eventually on to prison at Camp Chase.
Exchanged later that year.
James Van Buren Jackson was also a veteran of the Third Seminole Indian war. He served in a calvary unit in that conflict.
He moved to Louisiana about 1859 and married Francis Elizabeth
Mullinax (who had two brothers that served in the Second Louisiana Infantry), daughter of Mathew Mulinax (who was in a home guard unit--the Claiborne Guards).
He was born in 1836 in Georgia and died in 1914 in Claiborne Parish. He is Buried at Tulip Cemetery near Athens, Louisiana.
