Solomon Peck - Private

Solomon is a Great Great Grandfather on my Mothers side. Mustered in Sturgis Michigan, trained and marched to Nashville, Tn. He got ill in Nashville Tn. and was transferred to a hospital. He was listed as a desserter after being in the hospital for so long. Got out and married shortley there after. Because of his status as missing in duty he had a hard time proving an honorable discharge and had to fight for his pension papers. He eventually won. They later moved to Wessington Springs, SD where he had passed away in the early 1900's. I am looking for unit pictures of the 13th as all I have of him is a picture in his very later years wearing military vest. Also have a picture at his grave site burial w/full military funeral Prospect Hills Cemetary, Wessington Springs, SD.

Simon P. Foster - Private
|
Simon is my great-great grandfather on my mother''s side. Simon enlisted in Company G on October 26, 1861 for three years. The 13th was assigned to Buell''s Army. When Rosecrans took command Simon was one of those assigned to the Pioneer Brigade (Co. B, e Batt''n) where he served as a pioneer and teamster on December 17, 1862. In July 1864 he returned to duty with the 13th. In November, 1864 the regiment joined Sherman''s Army and was involved in the March to the Sea. Ironically, Simon''s brother, Jonathan was in the 19th Michigan and also was with Sherman''s Army. Simon and three others were captured by the Confederates ''whilst foraging'' on or about November 24th. He was sent to Richmond as a prisoner where he stayed until his release on February 26-29, 1865. He was mustered out at Detroit on June 27, 1865. He quickly married and lived in the Van Buren County area for several years and then moved to Rodney, Michigan where he lived the remainder of his life. He died at age 75 and is buried in the Rodney Cemetery.
