May be listed as DAW
Was born in South Parrot, England, Somerset County. He and PHOEBE ANN PURDY DAWE were married and living in their home that he built (brick) when he enlisted in Company K, 22nd Infantry, July 27, 1862 for three years at age 27.
He was mustered in August 22, 1862. He was discharged for disability at Detroit, Michigan, June 2, 1864 on account of wounds received in action at Chickamauga, GA., September 20, 1863.
His Mustering-Out Record: JOSEPH DAWE, a Private of Captain Gaibraith’s Company (K) 22nd Regiment of Michigan Infantry on July 29th, 1862.
Blue eyes, black hair. There seems to be a discrepancy of two days regarding when he enlisted. The Battle of Chickamauga was a victory for the Confederate Army in 1863.
He was a buggy maker by trade; also a wagon wheel maker. When he came home from the war, He was a different person entirely. My grandmother said many times that she was his favorite so she got along with him fine, but he was a very stern man; especially when he returned from the war.
