August Kuhne was my gr-gr-Grandfather.  He was born 18 Oct 1833 in Prussia, emigrated to the U.S. in 1852 and eventually settled in Hanover, MN to farm.  7 days after the birth of his 3rd child, he enlisted with Company A of the 11th Regiment of MN Volunteers on 24 Aug 1864.  Upon completion of his enlistment, he returned to his family and farming in Hanover.  He and his wife Bertha went on to raise 12 more children. Together they had 10 girls and 5 boys. August died 2 Aug 1917 and was buried in the 1st row of the Hanover Village cemetery.

August joined Brackett's Battalion Minnesota Cavalry in Sept, 1861, as a second Corporal, which was joined with the 5th Iowa Cavalry. He contracted dissentry in July 1862 and was discharged.
In 1864 he re-enlisted with the 11th Minnesota Infantry, 'A' Company, stationed at Buck Lodge, Tennessee, engaging railroad insurgents.
Discharged with the regiment, later Sheriff of Sibley County, Minnesota, and Legistator. Died in Nestor, Calfornia.
