My Second Great Grandfather.
Per Mississippi State Archives. --Private, 5th Mississippi Cavalry.--Wounded and captured in August 1864: --Gunshot wound in the right shoulder joint, --Gunshot wound through both hips.--Hospitalized in Memphis, TN. Released and transferred to POW camp in Alton, Illinois in December '64. Contracted smallpox and died 12 Mar 1865. Buried in unmarked grave in Illinois.
Additional Information on Alton POW camp indicates that smallpox patients, including guards, were quarantined at hospitals on island(s) in the Mississippi River. Those that died were interred on the island(s). The island is now permanently inundated by the Mississippi River.

John enlisted on 7 Aug 1863 in Carroll Co., MS. He fought in the skirmish at Wyatt, battle of Collierville, and he was wounded 4 Dec 1863, I believe at Wolf River bridge. He died 7 Feb 1902, and is buried in Allphin Cemetery, Madison Co., Texas.

Thomas enlisted 10 October 1863 at Koscinsko, Attala County Mississippi as a Pvt. in George's Company Miss. Cavalry. On 28 Oct. 1863 he was transferred to Capt. Turner's Company. This became Co I 5th Miss Cavalry. He has 6 cards in his archival file. Other than being our sick no other data has been found.He died 11 July 1900 in Limestone County Texas. He was my 2nd cousin 4 x removed. Deo Vindice

(duration, for the war). Discharged 4/26/65. Original enlistment was in Co. K, 15th Miss. Inf. on Aug. 18, 1861, age 16, at Corinth, Miss. by Capt. T.B. Foard, for period of 12 months. Discharged from this assignment on April 26, 1862 by act of Congress (CSA).

James Was born in either Alabama or Miss. 5 Sept 1829. Enlisting at Meridian, Miss on 6 Oct 1863. He has 4 cards in this file and x number of cards in Co B 31st Mississippi Regiment of Infantry as 3rd Lieut. He had enlisted in the 31st 1 April 1862 in Orr's Regt, Miss. Vols. He contracted Measles which developed into Chronic Rheumatic Inflammation and a medical discharge on 4 Nov 1862. James married 4 times and his last wife Amanda McCown filed for pension on 1 Mar 1915 from Rice, Navarro Co Texas. and gave information on his duty with the 5th Miss. Cavalry stating he served with Captain Allen's Co. under Col. George. With the 31st his only actions were Bombardment of Vicksburg and Engagement at Baton Rouge La. His is the father in law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.
