Ethelred Harvey Jones - Private   
Ethelred was born 16 April 1844 in Smith County, Alabama. The 1860 census finds him in that county at age16. His exact date of enlistment is unknown. It is believed he was in the Tullahoma Campaign and in the Atlanta Campaign where he was captured near Dalton Ga. on 13 May 1864. He was sent to Louisville, Ky and on to Rock Island Prison in Illinois arriving in that hell hole 14 June 1864 where he contracts severe Bronchitis. He has 14 cards in his archival file. He died 9 Nov 1910 and is buried in the Shady Grove 1st Baptist Church. He is the father-in-law of my 2nd cousin 4 x removed.

Lorenzo Franklin Wilson - Private   
Lorenzo Franklin Wilson was my great great great grandfather, son of Ephraim and Charlotte (Christmas) Wilson. He was born 16 Nov 1825 in Houston Co., GA. but moved with his family to Mississippi where he married Jemima Ann Byrd in Smith County, Mississippi 03 Jan 1849. Lorenzo and Jemima were the parents of five children: Nancy Ann; Harriett Elizabeth; Orlando Franklin; Charlotte L.; and my great great grandmother, Amanda Jane Wilson.

Lorenzo enlisted in the 8th Mississippi on 1 June 1861 at Raleigh, Smith County, Mississippi and was captured on 25 November 1863 at The Battle of Missionary Ridge. He was transported to Rock Island Prison where he died on 31 January 1864. Lorenzo was buried the same day he died in grave #320 in the Rock Island Confederate Cemetery.

George was 21 years old. He has 19 cards in his archival file. He joined Capt. G.C. Chandler's Co. 8th Regt. Miss. Vol's. at Enterprise, Miss. on 18 Oct. 1861. George contracted rheumatism while in camp and he suffered with it during the entire war. Being sick in camp and in the hospital twice. 1 Feb. 1864 he is promoted form 3rd Corporlal to 5th Sergt. In 1865 with the ranks of the Infantry depeleted, Miss. consolidated the 3rd Battalion, 5th, 8th, & 32nd Regt. to form the 8th Battn: Miss Infantry.

Joined Co. E 8th Ms.Regiment known as the Tallahoma Hard Shells of Jasper County. He was slightly wounded May 14,1864 at Resaca, Georgia. Placed in command of Co. E and was wounded again July 22 east of Atlanta. He died August 18, 1864 in Atlanta where he is said to be buried. Married Sarah Ann Baucum in 1853, they had 4 children.

He fought with his unit through out the war and surrendered with his unit at Citronella Alabama on 4 May 1865. He gave his residence as Clark Co Mississippi. He became a doctor [MD] and married my 3rd cousin 3x removed Virginia C 'Tiny' Thomas 17 May 1866.

On a roll dated May 31 - October 31, 1864 in which Thomas appears on roll as follows: Holcraft, Aaron Thomas Washington, 17, 4/20/1864 (age and date of enlistment)
'The Company was at the Battle of Harrisburg, Mississippi, July 14, 1864, marched 60 miles in 42 hours and, after the battle was over, volunteered their services and went to Chetaw (Chatom?) Alabama to check a Yankee raid under General Roseau and have been in active service on detached duty ever since.'
On a roll dated November and December 1864:
'The Company has been on post duty at Meridian, Mississippi ever since last muster except one week it was called out to repell a Yankee raid.
Thomas was born 1846 in Holmes Co. Ms. and died 1936 in Drew Co. Arkansas. Enlisted at Enterprise, Clarke Co. Ms. as reserves for the 8th Mississippi.

He died of disease at Chattanooga, Tenn on 25 Dec. 1862. He was in Captain White's Company. His estate was settled on 4 June 1863. His widow Emma was paid $20.16 cents. There is a stone for him at Concord Baptist Church, Bay Springs Baptist Church, Jasper County Mississippi. He was the husband of my 1st cousin 5 x removed, named Emma Horton Gandy. Pvt. Robert Braxton Holcroft was born 1838 in Holmes Co. Ms. and died August 27, 1863 at Chattanooga, Tennessee . Returns on the 27th August, 1863 of the 8th Mississippi show 3 men were killed and one injured at Chattanooga, Tennessee by a shell blast from a shot fired from enemy batteries on Waldrons Ridge. He was survived by his wife Nancy and a son R.B. Holcroft II of Kemper Co. Ms. Nancy's brother Burwell Jones also served in this unit.

John Covington Thomas Jr. was born 2 March 1822 in Jasper Co. Miss. He was abt 40 years old when he enlisted at Ellisville Miss in Jones County Miss., in Capt. Samuel Prince's Co. 8th Regiment Miss. Infantry on 4 May 1861. This unit became Co. K.8th Regt Miss Infanty and mustered into Confederate Service on 18 Oct. 1861 at Enterprise Miss. John spent most of his time in the service as a Hospital worker. He became disabled and was honorabley discharged for disability on 6 Feb. 1863.
