John Iverson Roberts - 1st Lieutenant |
John I.'s term of service in the CSA army was of short duration and was marred by failing health virtually from the date of his enlistment. Declining health, in fact, forced him to resign his commission after only six months of service. He was hospitalized throughout the summer and into the early fall. On September 20, 1862, he formally tendered the resignation of his commission, giving as his reason the fact that declining health made it impossible for him to any longer render useful service to the Confederate cause.

Robert A Merrill - Private |
Robert is a missing relative for us. It seems he enlisted in Carroll County MS. The Merrill genealogy lists him simply as 'killed in the civil war'. Our family historical stories are that he 'was last seen sitting down propped against a tree, mortally wounded, at Vicksburg', never to be seen again. In researching ancestry.com on a free trail basis, Robert may have been captured during Murfreesboro, transferred between more than one POW camp, was involved in a prisoner exchange.......how he may have ended up at Vicksburg. The genealogical trail ran cold, though, trying to follow a prison record. In December 1863, the 30th MS consolidated with the 29th and 34th.
