According to family genealogy records Thomas Johnson enlisted with the 34th MS in the spring of 1862. This regiment was originally known as the 37th MS. He was a lieutenant when he was killed in action at Perryville, KY in October of 1862. No burial records exist for Lt. Johnson.

Luna, Lunsford Long, Pvt. Co. A&E, 34th Mississippi Inf. CSA

L.L. was born 05 Feb. 1833 in Hardeman Co. TN to John Smith Luna (TN) and Sallie Davis Currin (AL). The family moving to Tippah Co. MS in 1834/36. L.L. was named for his GGreat Grandfather Lunsford Long & Uncle, Lunsford Long Luna, who resided in Hardeman Co. TN . He enlisted in the CSA Army 25 Feb 1862 as a member of the volunteer “TIPPAH RANGERS” 37th Mississippi Inf. He was “dangerously” wounded at the Battle of Perryville, KY on 08 Oct 1862 & returned to duty in Mar 1863. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lookout Mt. TN on 24 Nov 1863 & remained a POW at the “ infamous” Rock Island, IL Union Prison until the end of the conflict. Surrendered & paroled at LaGrange, TN 27 May 1865, he walked back home to his family in Tippah Co. MS. L.L. married Sarah Virginia Blair (b TX 1843) 08 Sept 1860 Tippah Co. MS. L.L. died 24 Feb 1919 while living with his son, Joseph Winfield Luna, my Grandfather. His CSA pension application # 30 was filed in Tippah Co. on 29 Aug. 1916 and granted 05 Sept 1916. L.L. and his wife, Sarah, are buried in New Salem Cemetery, Tippah Co. MS. Both graves have markers. In addition L.L. had four brothers, a brother in law, 1st Cousin and numerous other kin that served in the CSA as follows:

John enlisted on Feb 25, 1862 and was captured Sept. 20, 1863 at Chicamauga, Ga. He was sent to Louisville, Ky military prison. He was forwarded to Camp Morton, Indianapolis on October 21, 1863 where he died 2/3/1865. He was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN.

Private Robert Stinson was the youngest of the four Stinson brothers who served Tippah Co., MS in the war. He enlisted on 3/1/1862. Other information coming later...

Enlisted in Smith's Rifles 3/3/1862 Abbeville, MS Lafayette County. James was a teamster who lost a leg after being shot. After the war he moved to Texas. He was my greatgrandmother's brother.

David, my greatgrandfather, enlisted 3/3/1862 at Abbeville, MS Lafayette County. He was shot in the right eye at Chickamauga 09/19/1863 and left for dead. His brother, Isom Cook and brother-in-law, James J. Burleyson told my grandmother, Minerva Burleyson, he was dead.
They had no idea he was taken by Catholic nuns and treated for his injuries. Over the next 14 months he was treated in various hospitals as the war progressed. He finally made it home 14 months later and found my grandmother was making a wedding dress to remarry.
I have found few records of soldiers who survived being shot in the face or head. Luckily, being shot in the face meant dirt and clothing weren't dragged into the wound which would have led to infection.

Enlisted 5/5/1862 Abbeville, MS Lafayette County. He was my great-great uncle.

Jackson Lumpkins is my fourth great grandfather. He served in the 34th Mississippi Infantry Co. G as a Teamster. He was capture in the battle of Look out Mountain and sent to Rock Island, Illinois. He was transferred for exchange on March 13th, 1865. It is unclear when he passed away or how. His probate document date was January 21st, 1867. If anyone had information on him or a photo feel free to send me a email.

He was captured at Perryville, KY and exchanged in Vicksburg, MS. He was wounded at Battle of Chickamauga. He recovered and served till the end of the war. He is buried in Tippah County MS at Antioch Cemetery.

James Joseph Street, my gg grandfather, served with his son George M. D. Street in Company G. He returned to Tippah Co. Miss. and died at the age of 92. He is buried at Antioch in Tippah Co.
