Henry was a late addition to the 11th NJ, probably joined late in 1864. At the time he had a wife and young children at home in Newton, New Jersey. He hoped to become a chaplain in the regiment, but the war ended before he had the chance to attain this post.

Joseph Condit BALDWIN - 2nd Lieutenant
I replaced his broken tombstone in Nov 2003. He is buried at the Fairfield Dutch Reformed Church (FDRC) in Fairfield, Essex County, NJ. He attended that church with his wife Mary Speer. The 1866 people made sure to bury them front and center, first row of the churchyard. In Jan 1866, his sister Mrs. Abby Baldwin Martin went to Spotsylvania VA with a contingent of people to dig up the body. A funeral was done at the St Paul Church in Newark NJ in Jan 1866. Then brought to the FDRC for burial.

In Nov 2003, I threw down 20 bags of dirt and spread grass seed. I cleaned the graves of 10 Speer/Belding/Crane relatives buried by Joesph. Unfortunately, a large tree drops green sap on them again. I took off the water drain pipe that ran onto Joe's grave. Later, paid the church to reroute it. I hope it is moved for good to show respect.

I offered but no takers yet to have about 10 or so large pavers by the water spigot, so as to keep mud away from Joe's grave. Maybe you can try.

I periodically leave flowers by his grave.
