Mustered in Sept 1864 as a private. The 38th NJ was assigned to separate brigade, Army of the James. The regiment was deemed not ready for combat and was assigned to garrison duty at Fort Powhatan, VA and experienced no combat. Mustered out as corporal on June 30,1865. John J Stewart was born in Millville, NJ in 1830. He lived in Millviile, Franklin Twp, Landis Twp, Absecon, and Atlantic City,all in NJ, before dying Aug 24,1909 in Atlantic City. He was a member of Joe Hooker post #32 GAR in AC at time of his death. Also a Methodist and a Freemason.He is buried with his wife and three of his children in Pleasantville, NJ. My great-great-granduncle.
