Hugh Galbraith - Corporal   
My great great uncle Hugh Galbraith joined the 56th out of Ellenville at the age of 15. After serving three years he re-enlisted and was promoted to corporal. He was wounded at the Battle of Honey Hill and died from his injuries on Dec 1st 1864. He is buried in Beaufort National Cemetery.

John Whipple - Private   
John Whipple volunteered for the 56th NY mustered in under Asa Hodge in Oct. 1861. Led by Col. Charles Van Wyck his journey took him from the mountains of Sullivan County, NY all the way to Harrison's Landing were he endured the diseases of the south which led to his death in the summer of 1862. His is buried in The Cypress Hills Cemetery in New York along with scores of others who never made it home. He left behind his wife Elizabeth Decker Whipple and 2 children Cynthia and Lawrence.
Cynthia lived to be 92 years old.
