My Grandfather was not in the actual battle lines of the war; he was required to fulfill his obligation to the Confederacy by working in the Silver Hill Mine in Davidson County, NC (called detached service). The mine extracted lead to support the Confederate Army and provide lead and silver for ammunition. The Civil War created an urgent need for lead to supply Southern troops. The Confederate government operated the Silver Hill Mine (formerly was the Washington Mining Co.) to provide an alternate source of lead in case the mines at Austinville, Virginia should fall into Northern hands. Lead concentrates with high silver values were shipped from Silver Hill to the newly constructed Confederate smelter in Petersburg, Virginia.

Alfred Wilson Wiseman was born in Davidson County NC August 10,
1934. He was the son of William Washington and Nancy Owen Wiseman. William was a well known statesman at the time. Alfred was the third great grandson of Thomas Wiseman. That Thomas was the father of Avery County's William Edward Wisemans father, my connection. Alfred had attended medical school in New York in 1852. April 17, 1862 he was 27 years old when he joined the CSA Army at Davie County NC. His family was living there at the time. He was assigned to Company A, 7th Regiment NC State Troops as Assistant Surgeon. His brother James Washington Wiseman was assistant Surgeon with the NC 42nd Regiment. In September of 1862 Alfred's unit was at a place near Sharpsburg Maryland, called Antietam. Over 20 thousand men were killed there that day, many wounded that would die later and over a thousand confederates were missing or taken prisoner. Alfred was taken prisoner. In 1863 Alfred resigned due to health problems. Returned to Davie county where he and wife Sarah (Sallie) raised a family. He worked as a MD. He died May 13, 1907 at Jerusalem, Davie County.

If anyone has any photos of the NC 7th Regiment, please contact me. I have some photos of my great grandfather, Edward C. Vick, and will share. He enlisted on May 21, 1861 and was mustered into service on June 19, 1861 and assigned to Company E, 2d Regiment, North Carolina Troops.He was severely wounded in his left leg at the Battle of New Bern, NC. His left leg was amputated below the knee as a result of that wound. The operation was performed by a Yankee surgeon who, apparently, had been captured. I look forward to hearing from other ancestors of the NC 7th. Thank you.

Born in 1838 on his family estate Locust Grove MD. The oldest child and son of , Elbert Grandison, prominent large truck farmer and former owner the successful mercantile - Hodges & Emack which was located on Capital Hill in Washington DC ( also delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1867 for Prince George County MD) and Margaret Turner Emack. Grandson to the Hon. James Turner and Sarah Calder Turner. (Mr. Turner was a US Congressman and member of State Senate of MD). Brother to Captain (Major upon retirment from service) George Malcolm Emack, 1st Calvary of MD Company B. Brother to Elbert Grandison II. Eudora Virgina, John Duke, Dr. Alexander Franklin 'Frank' Dulin, Charles Calder, Charles Grandison, Edward Grandeville.
James suffered a fatal grapeshot to the left shoulder and shot in the ankle. James is buried in St. Johns Episcopal (Zion Parish) Cemetry in Prince George's County MD next to his loving parents and surrounded by other family members.

Frances Wilson Query was my greatgreat grandfather. He enlisted as a Private at age 37 on July 4th, 1861. He was promoted to Full Corporal August 12, 1862 and then promoted to Full Corporal May 30, 1863. He was killed at Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA.

Edward Graham Haywood - Colonel
|
Edward Graham Haywood was a Wake County attorney before being appointed to serve as Lt Col of the 7th Regiment. He was 30 years old. His first assignment was with Company S. On Jun 27, 1862, Haywood was promoted to Colonel, and let the Regiment through The Seven Days Campaign and was wounded at Second Manasas and Chancellorsville. Haywood resigned due to his blindness caused by his wounds on Jul 22, 1864. Source: Manarin and Jordan, North Carolina Troops, 4:405. I'm looking for a photo of him.
