E A was born in Stokes County NC. Died April 26, 1922 at his home at the Regal Hotel,Murphy NC. He was 91 years old.Volunteered at the beginning of the war to serve in the CSA. His unit was 21st North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Served with distinction. He was in the Battle of Bull Run,Gettysburg and other battles in Maryland and Pennsylvania.Was wounded and captured at Petersburg.Remained in prison until the end of the war.E A was the father of nine children. Burried in Sunset Cemetery,Murphy NC.

John Henderson Miller

After surrendering at Appomattox, John Henderson Miller returned home to Cotton Grove, south of Lexington, NC. There he and former slaves made the bricks in the yard, and constructed a house that still stands across from the Cotton Grove United Methodist Church on Highway 8 at the intersection with Jersey Church Road. The house was completed in 1867, when he married the former Mary Elizabeth Lindsay of Midway, NC. Their children were Mary Lindsay Miller ((Raper) John L. Miller, Hugh Marvin Miller (died in 1892 at age 15, cause unknown so far) Annie Lillian Miller (Long), and my grandfather Leroy Miller, who was only three when his father died. Captain Miller was my great grandfather. He is buried in the Miller family cemetery west of Abbotts Creek.

Azariah & Carey Byrd Denny

Before Azariah was twenty, he left family in Surry County for Virginia. In Danville, the 11th NC regiment formed - later it was numbered 21st NC. Marching with Generals Beauregard and Jackson, the 21st were frequently engaged. Azariah, with C Company, was on the field in each campaign. As a dispatch runner in the battle of Cold Harbor, Azariah is killed by marksmen. In Surry County, the state Home Guard 'drafted' brother Carey Denny who had objected to fight and worked his farm - He would serve in the same company and regiment during the seige on Petersburg. The next year, on retreat to Appomattox, Carey Byrd took fever and was left for dead. When he recovered however, he's picked up by a union officer. The man probably realized Byrd's situation, so releasing him - Carey Byrd eventually walked home. He was a farmer and Baptist minister.

William J. Burchett, Born: April 13, 1843 in Robeson County, Back Swamp township. Died May 28, 1919. Mothers name: Mary Baxley Burchett, Father: James Robert Burchett. Enlisted at Winston, NC, Forsyth county on October 22, 1864. Was mustered into 'D' Co. NC 21st Infantry on same day. Was wounded and captured at Hatchers's Run, Va. on 6 February 1865. Was sent to Point Lookout, MD. as a POW. Was paroled on February 20, 1865 and arrived at Boulware's Wharf for exchange. Was listed on the rolls at Camp Lee, Va. on February 28 1865. Have not been able to find a discharge record for him. Was a successful farmer in the Back Swamp Township. Family history tells us he was a Mason and laid the corner stone for the Back Swamp Baptist church. He and his wife Martha had seven children. Appie, Martha Ann, Mary, James Ireden, William L., John, and J.A. 'Knotts'. He also raised a stepson Miles Prevatte, that Martha had in a previous marriage. He and wife Martha are buried in the Prevatte Cementry located on Singletary Rd. in the Back Swamp Community. You find the name Burchette spelled in various ways during that period. etc. Birchet, Burchit, Burchet, Burchett, Burchette.

Resided in Forsyth County where he enlisted at the age of 19 on May 22, 1861, for the war. He was mustered in as Private and promoted to Corporal in May 1863-October 1864. Present or accounted for until he was wounded and captured near Chancellorsville, VA on May 3-4, 1863. Confined at Old Capital prison, Washington, DC until transferred to Fort Delaware yankee prison, DE on May 7, 1863. Paroled and transferred to City Point, VA where he was received on May 23, 1863 for exchange. He was hospitalized in Richmond, VA on May 16, 1864 with a gunshot wound of the left leg; however, place and date wounded was not reported. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1864. Promoted to Sergeant in November 1864-February 1865. Present or accounted for through February 1865.
