A 27-year-old farmer, John stood 5'9' when he enlisted as a sergeant in the 'Marion Men.' Promoted to First Lieutenant in April 1862. He was wounded at Antietam and resigned in October 1863 by reason of 'piles.' His gravestone reads, 'He was a brave Confederate soldier and an honest man.'

Born in Rutherford County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in McDowell County at age 29, September 11, 1861. Present or accounted for during January - April 1862. Deserted on May 13, 1863. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia. Decmber 8, 1864 with a gunshot would to the right leg. Place and date of wound not reported. Furloughed for sixty days on December 124, 1864.

Henry Hoover was born and died on South Toe,Harvard community,
Yancey County NC. He was 21 years old and temporarly living at Linville Falls,McDowell County when he joined the CSA army September 11, 1861.
He was assigned to Company B, 35th NC troops.Henry had some serious family problems at home and could not get leave time. He left anyway and returned later. He was put in Castle Thunder prison at Richmond.Because of the treatment there his health failed. Dropped from the Co roster November 20,1864. When he returned home he was wearing his confederate uniform. To take a picture the uniform was coverd over with a white cloth to be within the law. It is not known where Henry is burried.

Enlisted 1 Feb 1862. Captured at Weldon R.R. on 19 Aug 1864. Arrived as P.O.W. at City Point on 24 Aug 1864. Exchanged for Union prisoner on 14 Mar 1865. Rejoined unit. Captured again, and held at P.O.W. in New York Harbor. Released long after the end of the war, and wandered home by foot. Rejoined his family after being presumed dead.

Thomas Ruffin Gentry - Private   
Pvt Thomas Ruffin Gentry served with the 35th NC Infantry from its formation at Camp Mangum, having enlisted in Company E from Person County. He met his end during the Battle of Plymouth. According to his commander 'He was shot through the body with grapeshot while assaulting the breastworks on the second day of battle.' My grandmother always said he was buried at Kitty Hawk but I think his grave must be somewhere near Kittrel as that is closer to Plymouth. Anyone one with information please email me.

This was my Great Great Uncle Born in 1837. Was in Co. E 35th NC Inf. Regt.
He was wounded by 3 rifle balls and 2 shell fragments at Petersburg VA and taken prisoner of war. Carried to Point Lookout Md. and from there was taken to Elmyra NY.
He survived the war and lived in Person County until he died in 1931.

6'3' Alex enlisted in Burke Co. NC on Oct 15/61 at the age of 40. in to the {Burke and Catawba Sampsons} for one year. Alex reenlisted May 1862 as a substitute. Alex was wounded at the battle of Plymoth NC. He recieved a gun shot wound in the left hand Sept 21/64 and was found unfit for duty, he was reassigned to the hospital in Wilmington NC as a nurse and fisherman. His son George served in the 6th NC Cav/65th NCST.
